Prednisolone and chronic pain
Hi,
This may seem an odd question but I was put on Steriods (Prednisolone) 2 weeks ago due to a sever chest infection and I noticed that my pain level came down greatly after only being on them for 3 days. Is this possible that these tablets done this? and if so, would it be bad for me to be on them for a long period of time? What would the long term effects be? Thanking you for your views and answers, Hannaie XXX |
Yes, this is possible. Steroids are anti-inflammatories and
if your other pain was inflammation based, it would respond to the Pred. I had a high dose prednisone treatment once with a taper, for a nasty spider bite, and all my neck and back pain went away during this time, and as soon as I was off the drug, everything came crashing back. |
Thanks mrsd,
I have to have an operation on my lower lumbar where they are going to put in a form of scaffolding to support the upper part of my body. I also have a Tarlov Cyst in my sacral joint and I am in pain there as well but my Neuro says that it is ok and not causing me any harm or pain? I am on the following meds..... Durogesic DTrans Patches 25 mg every 72 hours (3 days) Palixia 200 mg twice a day Oxynorm 5mg three times a day Baclofen 10 mg three times a day Lyrica 50mg three times a day and 2 Paracetamol tabs 4 times times a day (as they are supposed to give a kick to the Palexia) But I am amazed the relief of pain since I went on the steriods and now I am dreading coming off them in a few days as this horrible pain will be back in full force. |

Being on steroids for an extended length of time is VERY bad for the bones. I would NOT want to take them for very long. Plus it affects other organs in the body.
It's too bad since it relieved your pain. Talk to your doc about an alternative medication. Best of luck! Hugs, Lee |
