The "Accidental" Remission
The reason for this true story is to give some hope to someone else with RSD if I can, even though the actual cause of remission may remain uncertain. My daughter got rsd in R knee at age 14. Despite diligent effort and good insurance it remained undiagnosed til she was nearly 17. We had every quack doc,dx and treatment until hope came in an unusual way. After seeing an asst. prof of orthopedics, who was affiliated w Northwestern in Chicago, the rough deliberately painful exam sent hubby running to the hospital for a w/c to get her into the nearby hospital ER. She saw a doc there that had enough sense to understand there was more to her story than the 'its all in your head' theory or 'you need PT'. He sent us to a top pediactric ortho,a consistent top ten list doc who gave the dx and was good enough to be a safety net due to all the mishandled issues with dx and treatment. After a number of facilities in the area, alot of false hope and intense research we found a pain center that eventually was able to help. By this time the pain was of course out of control and had mirrored into the other leg as well. After meds, bier blocks[never with just lidocaine]arthroscopy[normal,of course]while using a continuous 6wk epidural and a personally designed PT program she finally achieved remission at age 19,until age 27 when the same knee was reinjured. So,have hope, especially if you are young,be your own best advocate, and keep seeking til you find the right facility.
