Giants player targeting 49ers player because of his history of concussions

This article almost made me sick to my stomach. Now i know that a guy with 4 concussions probably shouldnt still be playing a professional sport in the first place....but the fact that these Giants players were saying that they were specifically targeting Williams because they knew he had concussions and could ring him up and take him out. Its different if you were going after someone with a bad knee or a bad shoulder......but a concussed brain?!?! Second Impact Syndrome could kill this guy or cause serious disability! I just got in a facebook fight with a bunch of guys trying to make excuses for their comments. And yes, i am a Patriots fan so the guys arguing with me are all Giants fans......but this is just plain stupid to admit to the media you are targeting someone with multiple concussions.

Also on a side note.....CNN is having a special this Sunday Jan 29th at 9pm on concussions in youth sports called "Big Hits, Broken Dreams"

Your so right nightnurse. But there is nothing we the people
can do to make them understand this.

There are more comments on this issue in the  thread "Strategic concussions in football."

Plenty of us are appalled at this behavior.

Thanks Mark! I didnt even see that thread started. But glad to see the responses about how we all feel about that behavior. terrible!

Somewhat controverially on this this forum, I would defend the Giants players in that I don't think they understand the seriousness of concussion. Most people don't know that PCS even exists, I certainly didn't before I got it, and then found on the internet that this has happened to other people too. Noone I know had ever heard of it before either.

So from their point of view they were just targeting this guy in the belief that they might cause him to be dizzy for a few hours and then fine - no big deal. The problem is with lack of education in sport and society, starting with the neurologists who should be up to date with the evidence and aren't - not with the Giants players.

Maybe I am being over generous to them, and the increased levels of education and awareness of the dangers of concussion in American Football mean that they should have known better, but that's how it seems to me.

One thing's for sure, that guy should not have been playing and should never play again.

It seems to be really hard for athletes who have had multiple concussions to quit while they're ahead. The problem seems to be that many have a few concussions and then feel a lot better once they "recover" after a few weeks or months, so they assume they can just carry on. Where are the doctors who will tell them, "you are now at significant risk if you continue playing, and I highly recommend that you retire while you can still have a highly functional and productive life?"

This guy must have found one! Or maybe he came on here..... (by the way this guy was a very good player in Australia's most popular sport, so this is pretty high profile).

Adelaide utility Scott Stevens has retired from the AFL due to ongoing concussion problems.

The 29-year-old has not played since round three this season after being concussed in a training incident.

Scans failed to reveal a specific problem with Stevens, leaving Crows medicos puzzled by what they termed post-concussion syndrome.
Quote:

"Concussion is a brain injury, something to be taken very seriously, and it affects your whole quality of life and has ramifications beyond football," Stevens said in a statement.

"To play again, I would have to regain health and fitness and then be prepared that if I suffered another concussion the recovery time would be as long or longer.

"This is something I don't want to go through again."
