Scalp disorders after the TBI?
 

Just wondering if anyone's else's scalp has gone white under their hair after the TBI. Some patches of skin are peeling up. There's flaking & itching.

Maybe altered blood flow to the scalp?

Ironically, this is the one thing people can see that is wrong with me, and I don't even care that much about it.

But being single & wanting to do social events a few months or years down the line, it would be nice to address it.

Need to try another shampoo- hemp oil/hydrating. Or maybe a doctor?

haha....yes, this has been a little bit of a problem for me. Since the accident i suddenly have flaking of my scalp. I thought it was pretty random as well. I had such bad sensitivity to my scalp and was not allowed to scrub my head with my nails for so long (for fear of opening up vascular welts) that i thought that was what brought it on. Many months later it stayed that way. Im not sure why though. I couldnt pull my hair back into a pony tail for 3 or 4 months because it brought on such a headache.....now it doesnt bother me so much....but still occasionally have the weird patches and flakiness under.

Well, now, that is interesting. Does anyone have a problem with full-blown eczema?

I do, but it's difficult to evaluate the contribution of the TBI since I had bad eczema before the accident. I've always wondered whether my childhood eczema would have cleared up if not for the brain injury.

There is a skin fungus that can attack the scalp. It is VERY common.

Of all the shampoos out there, T-Gel by Neutragena is the best.

It will stop the flaking and itch. Often with one application!

This can come from washing the hair too often, or high humidity, sweating or changes in blood sugar as we age. If you wear baseball caps alot you may get it too.

Yes! I was *just* reading about this in the last few days, because this has been a huge problem for me since the accident I was in.

I have actually found several sources state that having a head injury can increase or create dandruff and/or dry scalp.

The fungus which is on our scalps normally and naturally has gotten out of control for some reason... I wish I knew why this happens to people suffering from neurological disorders.

Dr.'s online and other reputable sources recommend washing your hair every day, but that much shampoo would dry my hair out too much.

My hair dresser suggested using coconut oil on my scalp, but I've tried it and it doesn't help. (Plus, she doesn't know anything about head injuries.) Other than that, I've just tried to scrub my scalp and hair every morning whether or not I'm using shampoo.

The T-gel and other dandruff shampoos tend to dry out my long, curly hair which makes it super frizzy and crazy-looking. Personally, I'd much rather deal with the itchiness and flakes than to have unruly hair.

I found a product called "no-poo" and I just ordered it. It's a daily cleanser that's not supposed to dry your hair out. I'll try to remember to report back here after I've used it for a while and let you know if it helps.

The T-Gel can be used just on the scalp sort of like getting roots done. There may be a T-Gel like scalp treatment to leave on the scalp.

I used T-gel and let it sit to tingle a bit then rewashed my fine hair with a conditioning shampoo.
