hi. I'm new to this site. Three years ago my 27 year old son was in an auto accident and suffered a severe open brain injury. He is very fortunate to be doing this well.

I have several concerns. Before the accident he was dealing with pts issues from military deployment. Addiction, anxiety and depression. He hasn't forgotten how to abuse drugs. He also is depressed because he is 27 and still living with his parents. He can take care of himself but needs semi supervision. He also has a severe back injury. He has tried to work a few times but can't hold up all day.

I need advice. He is very smart and that hasn't changed. He is not a good driver anymore. He wants a little independence. My husband and I are not financially blessed enough to provide his own place. I need resources if anyone knows of any. We live in Mississippi. Thank you very much.

Has your son applied for Social Security Disability Income yet?

If he could get some steady income, there are supervised group homes for people like him. At my Brain Injury Support Group, there is a woman who is a survivor of a TBI who, after spending years as a resident, now runs her group home. Many in her home have similar conditions. This allows for group supportand knowledgeable care.

He needs to be under professional care if he is not already. Does he have access to VA care?

Mark has some great ideas. Your son might also want to look into vocational rehabilitation. They could talk to him about what he can do, what he could do with modifications, and help him get training he needs to be able to do some appropriate kinds of work.

Eowyn is right about Voc Rehab except, they might reject him until he is clean and sober. They may have a rehab program to direct him to first.
