Confused with Amitriptyline
Need some advice on Amitrytyline dosage. Wondering if it's best to take it all at night or split it up during the day? What has worked for others using this drug?
A little history. I've been taking Amitriptyline for about 3 months now. Started at 10mg at night for the first couple of which didn't do much for my daily headaches. Then, went to 20mg at night which was effective for two or three weeks. Later up to 30mg, taking 15mg at night and 15mg during the day. Using a pill cutter with the 10mg tabs to whip up this combination. Still having headaches but not as frequent and pretty much limited to later in the day after work stress and or prolonged computer use. So on my last visit to the Nuero this week after mentioning I that I still get occasional headaches, he bumped me up to 50mg(2 25mg tabs). He tells me I can take it all at night or in the morning or split it again. My decision?? I feel like he's just throwing more of this drug at me at this point just to get me out of his office faster. Three days now taking 25mg at night and 25mg during the day and I haven't been sleeping good. This higher dose at night is making me restless and my mouth very dry(maybe causing the restlessness??) Unsure of how to proceed. BTW, trying to spell "Amitriptyline" alone is something that gives me headache. :) __________________________________________________ _______ 7 months PCS. Drifting,
It sounds like you may be working against yourself. As you said, your head aches worse from stress at work and time on the computer. This is your brain telling you to take it easier. Your brain is not recovering when you put it under any stress that causes symptoms. Are there steps can you take to reduce the stress load at work and limit the computer time at home? Have you tried using Tylenol and/or aspirin for your head aches? If your head aches are not constant, aspirin and Tylenol for when you get a head ache would be worthwhile. You can combine full strength/dose Tylenol and full dose aspirin and get great pain relief. My doctor told me to combine them rather than take stronger pain meds. I have head aches frequently, especially since a bump in September. I take Tylenol as my first step. If it does not work enough, I add the aspirin. I rarely have a head ache that the combination will not solve. Then, you could go back to the 10 mgs at night to help with insomnia and mild head discomfort. I live with mild head discomfort, not quite a head ache. It helps to try to not focus on it just like ignoring tinnitus helps too. My best to you. |
All I can do to reduce stress at work is take a few breaks from the computer and leave early if a bad headache comes on. The headache potency and frequency also seems to correlate to the amount of quality sleep I have had the night before. Poor sleep plus a stressful next day and I'm wiped!
I have not tried Tylenol while on the Amitriptyline. Good advice, I'll call my Neuro and ask him what he thinks about taking the two together. Thanks for your help! |
I take 100 mg at bedtime. My doc said take it at bed because it's sedating.

There is no reason you can not take Tylenol and amitriptyline at the same time. They do not work on the same systems
btw, spelling amitriptyline is quite an effort. Does your spell check underline it? Mine does and makes a strange suggestion for the proper spelling. Tell you later. Don't want to ruin the fun of spell check. Drugs.com said this amitriptyline/perphenazine Tylenol (acetaminophen) Interactions between your selected drugs There were no interactions found in our database between amitriptyline/perphenazine and Tylenol However, this does not necessarily mean no interactions exist. ALWAYS consult with your doctor or pharmacist. (this is the normal disclaimer) My best to you. |
xxxcrystalxxx,
100mg Wow..that seems a little too much for me to handle. I guess I just need to man up and try the 25mg at night for a few more days. During the day, the 25mg seems fine as I am awake to drink plenty of water for the dry mouth. Thanks for the reply. Mark in Idaho, Unfortunately, my spell check is of the garden variety, just a boring squiggly underline.:D |
....
Is Tylenol paracetamol in europe ?
I havent tried it yet....maybe useful for me |
Amitriptyline

Amitriptyline is a generic for Elavil. Several years ago, my neurologist prescribed Elavil (amitriptyline) and Inderal as migraine/headache preventative. I went from 10mg, then, 20 up to 30mg nightly and about 40 mg's Inderal in the a.m. You might want to check with your doctor. These two are used in conjunction at many headaches clinics as well.
