ssi vs ssdi
hi all...what is the difference between ssi and ssdi? I am asking because I was previously using them interchangeably and am now just realizing they are different. I was just told that they are processing my application for ssi (since awaiting appeal fr ssdi) and that my worker is going to have it expedited due to my circumstances. What are the parameters of this program? Does it take as long as ssdi? I don't think I can take going through another 3 plus years of application for ssi. I am homeless with no money and can't stomach another denial. Just trying to understand what I am being considered for. Any insight? Thanks.

The short answer is:
SSDI is social security disability insurance for totally disabled people who have worked enough, recently enough SSI is supplemental income for those who are totally disabled (or blind or over 65) AND low income. |
