New To Board: Starting Neurontin but have joint pain: please help

Hi All-

I'm new to the board and have worked my way up to 900 mg in three divided doses for just over a month. It's helping with the all-over aching feeling and in certain areas of my muscles. However, it's increasing my joint pain which I realize is listed as a side effect.

1) Did anyone else have this as a side effect and does it go away?
2) Do you think it's caused by water retention around the joint areas which is compressing the nerves? Aside from drinking more fluids, any ideas on things that could help counteract this side effect?

I really don't want to give up on Neurontin as it is helping in other ways and my other side effects of nervousness and dizziness and loopiness and going away.

Thanks!!!!

that's one reason I hated Neurontin -- the water retention was terrible, plus the loopiness really got to me. I just couldn't tolerate all the water!

My doctor switched me to Topamax, as I didn't retain ANY water -- plus I LOST about 10 lbs on it, which is common on Topamax. :D You normally don't retain water on it. There is normally no "loopiness" either. There can be some side effects, but I didn't have any. I'm still taking it.

You might want to ask your doc if you can switch to it. As far as I'm concerned it's a much better drug. I feel it works better than neurontin too, as far as the pain is concerned. Best of luck & God bless. Hugs, Lee
