SFN just diagnosed after 4 years of PN

I am new to this forum but have been reading everything I can find on neuropathy for 4 years, since I was first diagnosed. This all started with stabbing/creeping sensations in my feet. So originally I went to podiatrists thinking this was wrong shoes, or something wrong with my feet. The pod docs sent me to neuros for EMGs which have shown different opinions. First EMG said mild PN and put me on Metanx, Lyrica, etc. Neurotin. As time passed nothing helped and the pain in my feet has severely limited everything I do. I have no life to speak of and the pain has sucked the life out of me.

An EMG last year stated I might have a Small Fiber neuropathy but evidently there was no neuro doc that did nerve bioposies. In February of this year a new neuro in town did the bioposy and the results showed SFN. She put me on Elavil starting at 10mg nightly for a week and then upping it by 10mg each week.

Right now I am at 50mg nightly - there may be a small improvement but I still cannot walk without pain. I am back on Metanx and have started mega doses of B12 and MSM.

I am 71 years old and have pretty much accepted that this will not go away but I need to find shoes that will allow me to stand or walk without major pain. Pretty much ruined my life. Have to use the handicapped walker cart at the grocery store , cant walk around the block without pain. I also have fat pad atrophy in my feet.

I buy shoes online or in the store & end up taking them back, cannot find any that do not cause pain. I do ice my feet after walking any distance but this gives only temp relief.

Does anyone have suggestions on shoes and/or relief for SFN?

Welcome to NeuroTalk:

You really need to come to our PN forum:

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forum20.html

Metanx already has methylB12 in it. To get the best results with it you should take it on an empty stomach or else the B12 may not be absorbed.

Did you have B12 test? Or a Vit D test? You should have both done so you can see where you are. Bring the numbers here because doctors don't know how to interpret the results accurately for the most part. And we can help you with that.
