Tooth hooked in Sinus
 

Hi

A few weeks ago i got a really bad pain in my tooth which lead to a major headache that lasted for about 9 days, panadol, codine etc didnt work with the pain. I went to the dentist and she found a deep cavity and put a filling in it. The pain still didnt go away, so she gave me some antibiotics and got an xray of the tooth to see where the roots were so she could take it out. The xray showed the roots had hooked themselves into my sinus. Now i am seeing a dental surgeon in 3weeks to get it taken out, he also wants to take out all my wisdom teeth as well.

Just wondering if anyone has been through the same thing.

If the dentist did not take an x-ray prior to the filling, she definitely should have because it would have shown her the extent of the decay as well as the root structure. It is important for people reading this to know that dental radiographs are essential in diagnosing most dental problems. Without them, it is not possible to evaluate the problem properly.

It is common for upper teeth, mostly in the posterior area, to be in close proximity of the lower portion of the sinuses. Sometimes a portion of the roots can actually be within the sinus membrane itself . This condition is also fairly common and oral surgeons deal with it all the time. Your surgeon should tell you the extent of the opening but if not, then it's a good idea to ask him. It is important to follow the post operative instructions given to you by the surgeon after the extraction to help avoid complications.

Why is the surgeon recommending the removal of your wisdom teeth? Are they impacted? Decayed? Causing overcrowding of your other teeth?

Thanks for your reply. I should have said that when I first went to the dentist she took an xray of the tooth and the xray showed that I had a very deep cavity. She then filled in the cavity with the hope of saving the tooth. When I returned to the dentist about a week later, the headache had not gone away and the tooth still hurt. She then suggested a root canal or an extraction. I opted for the extraction, as the tooth is sort of at the back and wouldnt be missed if it was gone. She then took another xray of the tooth, focusing on where the roots were located and what they looked liked. The results of that xray, as stated in my previous post, were that the roots were hooked into the sinus. She consulted every other dentist in the clinic and they all agreed that it should be removed by a dental surgeon..

I havnt seen the dental surgeon yet, my consult with him is 3weeks away as he only comes to this area about once a month. When I returned the missed phone I had from his clinic he wasnt there and the secretary just told me the messags he left for me..that he wanted to take out all my wisdom teeth as well. The reason why is on my list of questions for him when I see him. I think its because they are pushing all my teeth forward and overcrowding them.

Another question I have is, about a year ago I had the tooth infront of one of my wisdom teeth removed and the dentist said that I wouldnt need to have that wisdom tooth removed because ot would take up the place the tooth infront had taken....if that makes sense... Is that possible?

THAT WISDOM TOOTH MAY OR MAY NOT MOVE INTO THAT SECOND MOLAR SPACE. IT DEPENDS ON WHERE THE TOOTH IS ACTUALLY LOCATED IN THE BONE, IF IT IS AT AN ANGLE OR NOT AND IF IT'S HEALTHLY. IF IT DOES MOVE FORWARD, IT MAY ONLY MOVE SLIGHTLY OR CROOKED. IT MAY BE POSSIBLE FOR YOU TO LEAVE IT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
