Got a Whooping Cough booster today

We have an outbreak here in east central Iowa. My PA suggested it. It also protects against Tetanus (helpful!) and Diptheria, (:Scratch-Head: not so much)

The shot didn't hurt. The nurse said my arm would be sore tomorrow and for a couple days. I just leaned up against a wall and sped up that process.

Oh, my arm; my achy breaky arm....

I'm scared to get vaccines. I admit I don't like shots but with MS I'm just afraid to rock the boat. I have enough rough waves as it is. I hope you do well with this one. :)

Thank you, Kitty. My PA knows live vaccines are not good for MS, and this is not a live vaccine. Considering my level of activity, I agreed to this mainly for the tetanus protection.

Icing my arm was suggested to help with the upcoming soreness. Because I bumped it tonight I iced it while watching Dancing with the Stars. (hope Kathryn wins!)

Whooping Cough.. Wow, haven't heard of that for awhile. I hope we're not going to start having retro diseases now..

Do you think it's because all children are not being immunized?

Children in Iowa are not required to get the pertussis vaccine. You may be right, Sally.

We have a friend who REFUSES to provide her child with ANY vaccines, and they travel a lot doing ministry work. She exposes these children ON PURPOSE to some disease so they will get a "natural Immunity" to these diseases. This is one of the reasons we are starting to see an outbreak of disease that we had a huge handle on, and had beaten into the bushes. This woman takes her children to India where Polio is rampant. Scary! and then they come home and sit in their public school class where other NON vaccinated kids sit next to them. SCARY!

Im not sure which side of the fence to fall on. #1 my mom had polio as did my uncle. it was an awful disease, and now my mom has post polio syndrome and she is wreck! Had she had a vaccine as a child, she would have been spared this.

Do vaccines cause autism? I dunno, but there are a lot of studies that say no, even after the thymerisol was removed the studies are the same. is it our diets, and lifestyle and level of pollution and chemicals we feed ourselves that is making autism rise? dunno...something to think about.

Every time I get a vaccine I get sick. I get a flare. The last flu shot (yes, I know its a dead vaccine) sent me into such a flare I went blind with optic neuritis. Now im terrified to get a vaccine, yet im terrified to get next to those snotty kids in the grocery store. Darned if I do, and darned if I dont.

There are alot of commercials on now about the Adult Pertussis Vaccine and how people who are around babies and small children should get it.

We have a member on PN who developed all over burning neuropathy after a whooping cough vaccine. She is an adult and did it for her grandchild.

The pertussis vaccine was always harsh on the kids. Consider it a risk for anyone with autoimmune issues IMO.

The injection area is swollen, and hot this morning. My arm is a little stiff, or maybe I'm just being overly cautious about moving it at the shoulder.

My SPMS has been stable for 12 years. With the exception of the current emotional turmoil thrust upon me, only fevers have affected me. So far so good with this vaccination.

I had whooping cough when I was three months old. That was a long, long time ago before any vaccines. It was an awful time for my parents as I almost died.

My children all had the vaccine when they were young. It was combined with Tetanus and Diphtheria vaccines. DPT as it was called. Maybe still is. No problems at all. Whooping cough is not something a person wants to fool around with especially in the young. I believe if you get whooping cough when you are older it is not so bad unless if you have a compromised immune system - maybe.

Since the subject of Polio was mentioned the Polio vaccine began in 1957 and licensed in 1962. That's around the time I received the vaccine. Way before that my younger brother got polio. He was 2 1/2 years old - no vaccine then. He got a really bum leg out of it and at some point he may get post polio syndrome. Who knows. I know some who have gotten post polio syndrome. Some of those have died. Polio was prevalent back then. Nothing to fool with either.
