Wondering if anyone has a child with Autism and has problems with potty training
 

I was wondering if anyone has a child with Autism and has problems with poppy training issues??? Help!!

Hello! I know I;m new here, but I just so happen to be a mother of an autistic teen ((and an older teen with asperger's)). I went through many many poddy training frustrations when they were young!!

A few questions though. Do you have a boy, or a girl? Age? And what have you tried so far? And what exactly does your child do, or not do to make the training more difficult?

Hopefully we can help you get the ball rolling!

My son is 5 years old. I have tried reward chart, stickers charts, sitting him on the potty and singing, reading, he just has no interest in it! I dont know what else to do! I think he would rather wear diapers. He will bring me the diapers and wipes and tell me whn he has used the bathroom in his diapers. I have bought pull ups and he wil do the same thing! IDK what else to do!!

*nods* I remeber being in the very same boat with mine. ESPECIALLY when school was about to start for him, and he still refused to use the poddy! O.o

But then the unexpected happened that just MIGHT work for you. I didn't plan this, it just happened by accident and I was totally shocked that it worked.

My friend showed up at my house unexpectedly with her daughter who was my son's same age. They were already friends and played together at times. At the time, my son was on the poddy and refused to go on it ((again -.- )) BUT, when he heard his friend was there, and SHE encouraged him from the other side of the door... It took some time... like 30 minutes or more ((IF I remember correctly since it was quite a few years ago)) but.... VOILA!! He went!!

Never had a struggle after that! Just lots and lots of victory dancing!

Maybe a "friend", or someone outside of the family that your child REALLY loves spending time with could help in the same way.

Thanks thats a very good idea and I will try that!! He has very few friends. He has no socail cues!! But he does have 2 firends he loves and 3 very wonderful uncles!! Thv for the advice I will try it and let you know what happends!!

My 11 year old daughter is autistic and still in diapers. We've tried for ages. The school has tried, daycare has tried. She will sometimes go when we put her on the toilet, but only for pp. She will not do #2 in the toilet no matter what. She will only do that in her room looking out her window. It's odd, but that's what she does. We just have to hope someone notices and changes her before she decides it's time to recolor the bedroom again. :(
She is non communicative so she has no way of telling us she wants or needs to go potty.
