Glucose meter

I picked one up today. How often should i test myself and when. Before or after meals. Thanks Bill

Try testing right before you eat, then 1 and 2 hours after you eat. That will let you know what that particular food(s) do to your glucose. Try to keep your carbs to 45 or less per meal. Snacks to 15. Learn to read labels, the carb counts are on there, along with serving size.

If you start to feel funky do a quick stick. May explain a high or low.

On lows. 70 or lower is considered a true low. That 58 you posted was a real low. Treat with 15g fast acting carbs, wait 15 minutes and re test. If you have been running high 180 or more, as you come down it may feel like a low. Try to hang tough and ride it out. It will get easier.

Wait on getting new glasses till you get the D thing figured out. Blurry vision can be caused by glucose swings. If you are having problems reading, get a cheap drugstore pair of readers. And if it is D, wait till you get stable #s to spend waaaay too much $$ on new glasses.

Barb, Thank you great advice. I wear bifocals so i'll wait till i get everything sorted out.

yesterday i felt alittle off and i little shaky so i had some hummis and chips and 3-4 hard candys around 3:30pm
6:30 glucose was 142 then i had fry fish-7-8oz and fryed clams-1/2lb
7:15 glucose was 269
8:00 1-banana 1-glucose tab 4mg a litte bit of a high
9:30 135
this morning 8:00am 103
I figure nothing wrong with being pro active and log everything down
Monday i'll be more serious about eating more heathier and drop my coffee intake alot and drink more water.

Why did you have a banana and a glucose tab at 8? You were at 269? Some cheese or nuts would have been a better choice. I haven't had a banana for so long I forget what they smell like! LOL That 103 in the morning wasn't too bad.

As you get into this, it does become easier. For now, just log your #s and the food. When you show this to doc, s/he will most likely start you on a med. Probably metformin. Please don't see it as a failure on your part. It's not. If you have insurance, find out what their preferred meter is, and how many strips they will cover. The meter should be free, and the strips should have a reasonable co-pay. Then tell doc to write a script for the max allowed. If s/he says you don't need to test that much, tell them it's for you, your body, your D.

I also have a very VERY low opinion of the carp the dieticians spew at their classes. If you'd like help there, PM me, and we can talk off forum.

I am T2 on the OmniPod now, but did the diet med excercise for about 8 years.
