The Hum

I hear a constant 'hum' in the background. This began when I moved into a new house almost four years ago. Initially I thought it was a generator used by the construction crew but now I know it wasn't. I have now researched it a little and see it is not uncommon and has actually been named 'the hum'. Have reported it several times to environmental health - noise pollution but to no avail. Their equipment cannot pick up such low frequency sounds. Does anyone have any idea how to cope?

I think it might be coming up thru the rock below your house.

UpNorth when we heard it, I was most obvious in the house and not outside. There it is ALL limestone. On the island we live on there is very little soil in fact...it is ALL ROCK.

Depending on where you live, I'd also get a radon test.

That doesn't sound right to me. Have they actually come out to your home and tested? I would think that if you can hear it, it's got to be in the audible range, and their equipment should be far more sensitive than that.

Are any of your neighbors hearing it? Is it possible that it's tinnitus?
