pain after extraction of abscess

If anyone has advice it would be appreciated ... Had molar 19 extracted on thurs morning due to abscess ... Had prior root canal on tooth and never knew I had infection until the pressure caused pain ... Am still in considerable discomfort ... Both at extraction site and in jawbone ... Have been rinsing with sallt water like dentist said to ... But also used some Listerine after to get rid of salty taste ... Looked at sutures and there is white tissue at wound ... Could this be the infection draining? Or does new gum tissue start off white? I am on amoxicillan for infection and codeine for pain

Laura,

STOP using the listerine as this will cause further irritation, pain and can cause a dry socket to occur. It will also burn the tissue which may be the white area that you are speaking about. ONLY use warm salt water rinses 3-4 times a day.

It is not surprising that your root canaled tooth became abscessed, they all eventually do. If the pain becomes worse and/or you develop fatigue, a fever, or large swelling see your oral surgeon asap.

Thanks ... Stopped using Listerine ... Burned when I used it ... got appt so the dentist can take a look at it first thing in the morning ...dont know if it dry socket ... Still have considerable discomfort but pain isnt unbearable

Hi Laura,

Ok, good. It burned because the chemicals and alcohol in the listerine are like a hot match on a surgical wound. It still may heal okay. Try not to worry.

Please let us know what the dentist has to say tomorrow.

Went back to dentist ... Healing slow but ok ... Wound looks "gnarly" to me - my description, not his - because I don't really know what to look for ... Have another follow up on Friday ... Thanks

Hi Laura,

Thanks for getting back to us with the update.
Good news that's it's healing okay! Gnarly is a good description of what the surgical area can look like after a tooth extraction... sometimes it's less gnarly looking than others :)

Hopefully by friday it will look and feel much better! Keep us posted.
