Strokes in young adults
Last year at twenty years of age i had two strokes, this is rare but not un heard of. I had multiple transient ischemic attacks followed by two strokes. All because of a carotid artery dissection they are not 100% sure on how this happened.. however coincidence on not i had just started talking the oral contraception pill a week before my first ischemic attack.
I would love to hear about other people my age having similar things. |

one of my husbands best friends married a younger woman. she is in her early 30s. on b/c pills and in great shape. she exercises, volunteers, and does other great things. She went home with a bad headache one day and her husband insisted she go to the ER. They told her she acted like a stroke, but she is "too young for a stroke" they wasted a lot of time before they put her in the CT scanner. husband demanded they transfer her. it was a massive stroke, and by the time they got to the other ER it was too late for the IV meds. They rushed her to surgery and removed 1/3 of her skull to allow her brain to continue to swell. she had severe deficits from it.
She worked hard, did her OT, PT and so on. she recovered some use of her arm/leg but its still really clear something happened to her. they put her skull cap back on six months later, and told her how lucky she was to live. NOT ONE MD will tell her the birth control pill could have caused it. NO ONE MD will tell her the delay in treatment forced her to not have the TCP stuff that would have disolved the clot. NOT ONE MD will tell her the whole story. they just pat her on the hand and tell her what a lucky girl she is. No family history of strokes, she didnt smoke, and her only risk factor was the pill. Scary how fast your life can change. |
