Antibiotics

Has anyone heard of cephalosporins (particulary Omnicef) causing neuropathy? I tried to research this online but didn't find any info.

Thanks,
Lindsay

I have looked several times, and not found any papers connecting this family of antibiotics to PN. However there can always be exceptions if a person has some genetic reason for an interaction.

Mrs. D

I was prescribed Omnicef for a sinus infection last year. While on the last 2 days of taking the Omnicef I developed a rash all over my body. I went to my PCP and she said I had an allergic reaction to the Omnicef. Approximately 3-4 weeks later my neurological symptoms began.

Do you think that the Omnicef could have caused my PN, even though there was a 3-4 week delay?

Allergic reactions are different from actual drug effects.

Allergic reactions involve histamine and inflammatory cytokines.

It is very difficult to say. But I'd see if you can get your doctor to give you some short term oral steroids and see if there is improvement.
