My mom has REM but she is sick all the time

My mom has REM (for a few years now) Disease. For the last year or sick she is sick ALL THE TIME. She can hardly eat. She is always nauseaus. Even pills to help with that feeling do not help. The doctors have told her there is nothing they can do for her. They don't know why she is sick. Her memory is going, she is having difficulty doing simple tasks... I understand this could be the start of dementia or Alzheimers.. or other? But why is she sick constantly? Mornings mostly are the worst, sometimes she just lays on the couch all day long being sick. Her stomach is always sour. Any ideas?
Also, do you know of a support group for REM Disease?
thanks

Welcome to Neuro Talk. I don't know what REM disease is, but I will look it up. You came to a very compassionate site. Lots of good folks to help you figure out how to help your mother. Has your mom, gotten an upper GI, complete with a biopsy? Anything to do with the stomach and nausea as a continous problem should be seen. It seems to me not enough is being done to help your mom. There are some very strong medications, including injections that they use in the hospital to control nausea. I will look up REM. Please keep in touch. Again, welcome to Neruo Talk, I will go look that up. ginnie

Hi again...

I did look this up and read an article about this sleep disorder. You have reason I know to be worried about your mom. I hope she can see a specialist that works with sleep disorders, and can also help with nausea. REM can be a precursur of some degenerative brain disorders as well, so I would go the extra mile and see what can be done to help. May I ask what other symptoms you mom has? I sure hope that you can find the help you need for her. Have you googled in REM for information? NT will be here, please know that I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. ginnie

Thank you. She has seen specialists, she has seen sleep disorder specialists, MAYO told her there was nothing to be done, every test and everything that can be done has. Several different doctors and mine and my dad's persistence. She is always sick and that's it. For a long time I (sadly) thought maybe it was in her head but the physical signs are so intense.. some days she is better and some days she is worse. I don't think anyone could "fake" that, even unintentionally if that makes sense. She has tremors, she is getting forgetful and sometimes unable to understand simple tasks (ie: please put the tv on channel 0 3 ..... it took her 5 minutes (we were on the phone) to do it.. I was patient and asked her if she remembered what numbers looked like and a zero and 3 .... she didn't answer). She gets frustrated and teary and knows something is not right. I'm at a loss if even MAYO cannot help. :( Thank you for your prayers.
