Meissner corpuscles
 

Scientists have demonstrated a new technique for detecting a painful nerve. The painless technique focuses on tiny structures in the skin known as Meissner corpuscles, which encapsulate the endings of microscopic nerves in our hands, feet, and other areas.

Note also that one of the first 3 tests required by Dr. David Herrmann (director of the Peripheral Neuropathy Clinic at Strong Memorial Hospital) for patients showing neurological symptoms is test for Vitamin B12, which is normally ignored by some doctors (and fortunately, recommended by this forum).
