My son is approved for SSDI

... Severe TBI, only 30 yo. My only complaint is that it was TOO EASY ... believe it or not. *ducks from the flying eggs and veggies*
Seriously, it was the first attempt, all routine, no lawyers, just the physical / mental evals and regular paperwork. This forum helped me get through it, thanks all. But now to face the future... my baby, my beloved zombie, is now officially permanently disabled ***CRIES HYSTERICALLY WEEPS SOBS HEAVES SACKCLOTH & ASHES, ALLADAT AND NO PROZAC*** godhelpus.............

It's great when you can find humor in "our" situation(s).

I can only hope a little humor might keep me somewhat sane!

I'm glad that at least the SSDI portion of your 'story' went simply.

I can't imagine what you must have been through seeing your hopes and dreams for your child become 'this'

I'm guessing that you deserve a break.

Thank you. It's really worse than unimaginable... I am full time and only caregiver for him, plus have to work full time, plus keep up the house (which is currently in ruins due to a water leak). I'm stretched to the limits. Yup I sure needed that break, except it's very little pay and more than half goes to his child support. Not nearly enough to cover his expenses. On top of that he's not at all pleasant to be around, irritability and frustration issues... someday he's gonna eat my brains, I just know it! (RAWR) LIFE IS HELL

When you can find the time, call and/or go to your local Social Service department to find out if you & your son now qualifies for any or all of the following......

Adult Day Care (off site)

Companion (on site)

Home Health Care

Any of the above will at least take some load off of you = piece of mind.

This town doesn't have adult day care anymore, funding cut off last year. :-( Tried to find a live-in caregiver that IHSS would pay for, but all the applicants I got were substance users or had some kind of disability themselves, or homeless. And anyway I figured out that they would only aggravate and infuriate my son for them by just being here, he doesn't like people at all and would not tolerate a companion, roommate, whatever. I hope he soon gets past this unsociable stage. I HOPE it's just part of the process of healing and adjusting!!! But some of it will likely be permanent.

He's actually high functioning enough to take care of his basic needs, cooking, etc., walks to grocery store, and he's safe enough to leave alone while I go to work (eves/some nights) or run errands for a while. I just still worry the heck about him and try to keep close tabs on him with texting while I do. Which also PO's him... ohhh welll... If something happened while he's alone I'm not sure how he'd handle it. He's smart enough but is so easily overwhelmed and frustrated. I just dunno! Still very early in his recovery, things will just take a lot of time and adjustment.
So doing the best I can with the extremely few resources I have around here. If only I could just pick up and leave, but I'm tied to the house and job, and it wouldn't at this point be good to uproot him anyway. I would if I could find a rehab that will take him!

Didn't expect there to be any problems with the disability, severe TBI is on the list of diagnoses they almost always approve first time. It was good to have this site to refer to for tips on filling papers out. The SS office guy said I did a good job when I brought it in. :-) It was a slam dunk.
... I'm just very dismayed that he's only getting a pittance. What's left after child support will barely cover gas to get him to neuropsych appts an hour away, so I guess I can say goodbye to rent payments. I'll have to check at the human resources center to find out. At least he gets food stamps.
And obviously I need to vent a bit, sorrryyyyy.... hey it could get a lot worse than that.........

What are the child support payments for ?
