Irritation to noises.

Ever since I was a little girl I am very sensitive to little noises like heavy breathing, snoring, gum-chewing, eating, etc. I get very angry feeling. I don't have this problem when my pets snore and eat. Only humans. It must be related to anger issues. Is there a name for this?

Hi Gloria,

No, I have never heard of this but it must be difficult being irritated so often. I wonder if something simple like deciding that someone is just breathing, enjoying gum, or falling off to sleep would help. Changing your mind w a conscious effort. Just replacing the irritation w compassion- Jane (or Joe) is just doing a good job of being themselves.

Other than that, if it really interferes w your relationships, some counseling might help.

Best to you,
ANN

Misophonia.

4-eyes, thank you! That is very interesting!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misophonia

It explains everything, even the human versus animal noises, the anger and the age of onset. Treatment is apparently anti anxiety drugs and or behavioral therapy.

Learn something new every day here.

This should help you Gloria!

Hybernating 08-11-2012 09:59 AM

Hello Gloria...

I am two years post concussion. I am "extremely" sensitive to most, if not all noise. For example, I haven't watched t.v. or listen to a radio in two years. I can't be around the wash machine, dryer, phones ringing, the air conditioner running in the house, blinkers, the rain, water running, my dogs toe nails on the floor, dog barking, when there is mowing or weed eating anywhere in the neighborhood, I've got to get away from it. The wind blowing is painful. I wear ear plugs in and out of my house. They don't...by far solve the problem, but I find it easier to live in a muted state. I have severe 'tinnitus' 24 hours a day so I'm not sure if I wear the ear plugs to keep the noise in or out, but the noise is less painful.

Hybernating,

That sounds more like hyperacusis, and it sounds miserable. Is there any kind of sensory therapy that might give you some relief?

Hugs!
