Is it common to Flare after Surgery?
 

Can anyone tell me if it is common to go into a Flare after a surgery? I had a hysterectomy and POP repair. It was a 5 1/2 hour surgery. It has only been 5 days....so I know it may just be from the surgery itself; but I am feeling really bad.

I had heart surgery in January and did not flare afterward. I do think I was given a dose of steroids prophylactically- right afterward. I am not 100% sure.

Sadly it is common daisy.girl, but everybody is different so it's possible that you will not relapse after your operation but because you are feeling bad, I suggest you call your surgeon. If he thinks your symptoms are unrelated to the surgery, then you should probably call your Neuro as well.

When peeps think of stress, they think, the mental kind, but there is always the "assult on your body" type stress. Great Stress of any kind is almost a guarantee of a MS exacerbation.

I don't have the usual RRMS flares anymore, but last Nov. a fall sent me to the hospital, not due to the injuries but, by the exacerbation caused by the injuries/assults on my body. An operation can be such an assult.

i've had several surgeries since my MS dx and thankfully did not flare.
however, it is still a risk to flare after surgery.

it depends on what you mean by bad. i'd call your surgeon to make sure you don't have a surgical complication like an infection. if your sx's are more like MS definitely call your neuro.
