What type of tests for Neuropathy should I ask my neurologist tommorrow

I think I have neuropathy from drug abuse and I see my neurologist tommorrow. What test should I tell him that I want to see if I have neuropathy?

Nerve conduction study. He'll hook you up to a machine and test your reflexes. He'll stick you with pins to see where you're numb. Good luck man. They tell me booze helped get me where I am.

Thanks, good luck to you too. So, if I pass that test will it mean that I don't have a Neuropathy? What test can be done to assure that I don't have Neuropathy?

There are two basic types of testing for neuropathy.
1) mechanical (external) ...where electro-conduction is done with needles and electrical stimulus, MRIs perhaps, Xrays for spinal evaluation for disc compressions etc.

2) biochemical testing:

These blood tests are complex and evaluate many potential causes of PN that can be found as markers in the blood.
Some are antibody tests, some look for bone marrow dysfunctions (MGus), nutrient deficiencies, autoimmune markers, cancer, heavy metals and other toxins, etc.

And, of course--

--one can have a completely normal EMG/nerve conduction study and still have small-fiber or autonomic neuropathy, as the unmyelinated, small-fiber nerves that subsume the sensations of pain and temperature are too small to be measured by those kinds of studies.

If it gets to that point, specific kinds of testing for small-fiber syndromes, from sudomotor axon reflex (sweat) testing, to qualitative sensory testing, to a skin punch biopsy to look at the microscopic nerve fibers, may be done. But I imagine that a lot of blood work would be done first.

It's very hard to tease out peripheral nerve problems from those of the spinal cord or brain, as the symptoms may be exactly the same. MRI's of brain and spine might also be indicated.
