Best Medicines for Migraines?

I know everybodys body is going to react different to diffferrent medicines. I just wanted to know if anybody has had any sucess with anything out there for migraines resulting from PCS. I am having difficulty finding something over the counter or prescriptiion that works. My migraines are chronic, everyday and the dibilitating type were all you want to do is lie down. I have light and sound sensitivity as a result of these migraines.

Also is there any advantage to an MRI a year down the road from a PCS injury. Is there anything helpful about getting an MRI when this much time has elapsed?

I too experienced dehabilitating headaches. The only way I got through the 1st 4 months was through taking hydrocodone. My primary care Dr. then put me on Amitryptaline, since narcos are not good for long term use. It took a couple weeks for the Amitryptaline to work, but it provided much relief for my headaches. I still get headaches occasionally, but they are manageable and largely related to how much stimulus I'm exposing myself to.

Others have experienced success with amitryptaline so it's definitely something I'd try out.

Dazed,

What have you tried so far for the migraines? Are you seeing a headache specialist or a neurologist?

There isn't a quick answer to the chronic migraine problem. There are preventative medicines and different medicines to take once you get a migraine. Everyone is different, so you really need to see a doctor to be evaluated.

Triptans (like Imitrex) are the only medicines that are actually made to stop migraines, but they are not supposed to be used every day.

If you give us more information about your specific situation and what you have tried so far, perhaps we could make some suggestions.

I am just too tired to write more now, but I did want to tell you that there are many here who understand what you are going through, and you should be able to find something to help.

Best, ShellyK

I use Imitrex for the initial response, following up if necessary with a second and sometimes a third dose if necessary. It this doesn't work (which is about 1 time in 10 or so), I fall back on Dilaudid, an opioid. Have not had this system fail me so far.

Dazed,

I recall the nonstop migraines, spending days in a darkened room, awaiting 'the relief' (for me anyway) of throwing up & it only then somewhat subsiding. I hope that these links from older threads may prove helpful to you.

Quote from Mark in Idaho 12-26-2011: "One OTC med that may help better than Extra Strength Tylenol alone is to add aspirin to the Tylenol. They can be safely combined ( my doctor taught me this trick) and the combined action is better than either alone. Almost as good as a Tylenol with codeine minus the drowsiness. " *If* I recall correctly, I think it's up to 1000 mg. each that Mark has had success. Here's the thread link: http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread52778.html

Eowyn gets some relief using cold packs.

You may want to have a look at these threads also:

These threads offer some very good selfcare experience in gaining some relief from the migraines when they're happening, some preventative measures, some traditional allopathic medicine/neurological rx meds & discussion of benefits/side effects, OTC meds, also complementary care and innovative offerings.

Let us know here what you try and what works for you, dazed.

Best regards,
Theta

If you're trying only OTC meds, alleve, and ibuprofren switch up from one or the other a couple times a week may help. Makes them more effective that way and less liver probs.
