Thyroid & PN

Well, my doctors believed my PN to be from hypothyroid since my TSH was at a 10.8 in July.

I fought hard and even fired a doctor over getting on NatureThroid instead of the typical synthetic hormone levothroxine.

This week I had my blood drawn again for thyroid panel. Results: TSH 2.4 Free T3 (triliodotyronine) 2.0 and free T4 1.07

I am very happy with these results and naturthroid, but....why is my PN still so bad????

I personally believe prediabetic spikes could be my cause but dr is firm on it being thyroid. Numb spot SEEMS to be less numb but..I dunno.

I have to wonder if the mucin deposited during the hypo times just does not go away once it is there?

This seems to be my problem too. Esp. in my hands.

I use Salonpas on both my feet and hands when there is
compression more than usual, and this helps.

The mucin deposition is not well understood, and so I don't expect doctors to respond to it, or even know about it...

I don't know what that is either, lol

Nor do i know what salonpas is.

The dr told me PN usually goes away when caused by hypothyroid...but I am not holding my breath. :(

I had never heard of Salon Pas either until Mrs. D started talking about them. But I have seen them at CVS now so if there's one near you, one of the clerks in the store or pharmacy should be able to direct you to them.

I use Salonpas (original formula) almost every day, somewhere.
Either my left foot, or metatarsal ball joints, wrists, knee, etc.
I cut them and use them on my fingers too.

They are excellent for certain types of inflammatory pain, and
reduce the need for oral medications.

They are inexpensive. I get mine in a jumbo pack at Costco.

There are several types, and I always use the one with methyl salicylate in them.

I will look into them, thanks.

Believe it or not that cream is working great so far, the 2 times I used it. Last night it worked great on my burning feet, but it was not a horrid burn but still, it worked great. Im surprised.

When my PN started, my TSH was high. The highest was 10. It was abnormal for about 6 months (Dec 2011 - June 2012). But even after the TSH became normal, the PN pain remains the same.

I am not sure if its a co-incidence but when I experienced a new symptom -- numbness and "hardened cement" sensation in my rght thumb -- when I had my TSH tested, it was 13.5 (about 3 weeks ago). I will have another test next week. I can never be certain if my PN is a result of my hypothyroidism because the pain is semi-permanent.

I read this article (its a long one but interesting) about hypothyroidism : type 2 -- I didnt not know that hypo has type 1 & 2 -- causing endless medical conditions. Among other things: blood sugar, gastrointestinal disorder, neurological impairment and pain in muscles and joints.

Hi Mrs.D,

I will try the Salonpas. I have a flare-up of arthritis in my fingers. I have this condition in my early 20's but it was not bothering me. Itwas just unsightly but for the first time, the joints are really swelling and "reddish" in color.

Thank you.

I still use the Epsom It lotion at bedtime. I think it works with the tightness in my neck :)

Thank you for that link! It was a great read and I completely agree with it. I fought for desicated thyroid medication and I'm so glad I did, I believe it saved me much pain and problems having started using it from the very beginning.
