lipoic acid question
I have small fiber neuropathy and have recently purchased a bottle of alpha lipoic acid, Jarrow 300 mg Sustain. I'm hoping, if I'm lucky, this will help the condition. My questions are this:
1. It's my understanding that lipoic acid is absorbed better if it is taken on an empty stomach? Is this accurate? 2. The tablets are 300 mgs each. I intend to take 600 mg a day, but have started off at 300. After about a week and a half at 300, I plan on taking two a day to get to the 600. I'm guessing the two 300 mg tablets should be spaced apart, i.e., one morning/one evening. Or am I wrong and is it better to take both at the same time? Or does it even matter. Thanks in advance for anyone's help! |
Yes, there is a study showing up to 30% less absorption from
lipoic acid when food is present. I really think using the new highly soluble r-lipoic acid stabilized, is easiest. 100mg a day, and that is it! One does not need high doses then. I'd still take it on an empty stomach though. But it is your choice after all. I use Doctor's Best brand. The old alpha lipoic is 50% inactive isomer...the S-form. Our bodies don't make this form, as it is a result of chemical synthesis by manufacturers. So out of that 300mg dose only 150mg is the active R form. I don't think it matters about dividing the doses. If you take it all at once, it will only block the transporter for it for a short while. Biotin and B5 share this transporter, so keeping a window open for them may be best all around for you. |
