Lots of pain for three weeks
 

I had a lot of mouth pain on the right side of my mouth like an itchy feeling that kind of radiated in my head and neck. I couldn't tell where the pain was coming from. Just the side of the mouth it was coming from. I went to the dentist and he filled a deep cavity. A week later the filling did nothing to reduce the pain so he performed the first part of a root canal (removing the nerve and cleaning canals). And said he would finish the rest when my pain goes away. He also put me on antibiotics which I finished days ago. Now a week after that, my jaw feels swollen and I feel like I got a huge toothache feeling where the itchy feeling was before but I can't tell which tooth it is. It dosen't even feel like that one but I don't know. None of the rest of the teeth had cavities? Help?

The dentist told me several times hes stumped and he dosen't know. And I got a second opinion and they told me the same thing.

Just got off the phone with the dentist. Hes going to take me in at the endof the day and try to figure it out. But I talked to him for maybe 5 minutes on the phone describing what I said on here and he says he has no clue what could be going on and hes going to try to figure it out but he honestly dosen't know.

Whoever could figure this out for me I would love you forever. I have had so much apathy since this pain started I can't bring myself to do anything productive. Can someone maybe give me some suggestions as to what to say at my appointment in a few hours?

Your dentist may convince you to keep this tooth. Keep in mind that once a tooth is this inflamed, the nerve is also infected. There is no cure for an infected tooth other than to remove it. Root canal therapy is a procedure that may give you some additional time with this tooth but it will remain infected the entire time.

It makes me laugh when a dentist tells a patient.... "he is stumped" when this exact thing is seen every day in most dental offices. He just does not want to admit that he closed up a hot tooth and now the pressure is causing additional pain.

If you want to rid yourself of a chronically infected tooth, then consider having it removed. If you wait, than sooner or later you will be right back to where you are right now. You can discuss replacement options with your dentist.

Sorry for the bad news... I just tell it like it is. Something your dentist should be doing....

Bryanna. But there are several more complications to it. First off there is just a lot of pressure in that general area of the mouth. I first wen tto the dentist about a month ago with the problem. he then saw a deep cavity in one of my teeth and filled it. The pain remained. The he did a partial root canal on the tooth and it also remained. I don't even know if its that tooth! I just feel pain on the upper right side of my mouth and my jaw hurts as well. So I wish I could say I knew it was that tooth and we could go from there. But the truth of the matter is, I have no clue where the throbbing pain is coming from.

I would also like to add I don't know why I would have really serious problems. Im 21 years old, I have good oral health until now, I eat a great diet I don't even know the last time I ate anything corrosive for my teeth besides citrus fruits.

I know you feel like you are too young to have dental problems but in reality age is irrelevant because these things happen to people of all ages. You said that you had a deep cavity which means it has had to have been there for a long time. So either you are not having routine dental care or your dentist missed it for quite a long time. Either way, it had to have been there for a while. If this tooth was painful after the filling was put in, that indicated inflammation with the nerves in the tooth. The only options you had to stop the pain were to do a root canal or remove the tooth.

If the tooth wasn't infected prior to the root canal, it is now because once the nerve is traumatized in the tooth, either from infection or a dental procedure, it becomes inflamed and infected.

You may have other problem teeth that need to be checked. But it is common for one infected tooth to make your whole mouth hurt. It is due to the pressure from the inflammation that is building up inside of the tooth. There are thousands of nerve branches in the mouth that connect to each other. So when one area is inflamed for any length of time, a pain signal travels along these branches and before you know it you feel pain in other areas.
