Bipolar/PDD Help
 

:confused:My nine year old son is beyond what the school district offers to help him. He is out of control. I have no idea what to do now. I feel like he needs to be placed in a residential facility or something with that intensity to begin this journey. Please if you have any suggestions or help of any kind I would appreciate it.

diagnosed first with adhd until he had a psychotic episode about a year ago
at that time he was diagnosed Bipolar Disorder type 1, mixed with severe psychosis, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, PTSD, ADHD and maybe ODD.
Current medications are 40mg Geodon B.I.D.

Hospitalized for out of control behavior and auditory command and visual hallucinations on five separate occasions since October 2011 the most recent being November 2012.

When released he was fine for a couple of weeks each time and then back to the same behavior issues caused by severe socialization issues.

We are in Central Texas with nothing that I can find to help us!!!

Hi,

Are you within a couple hours of San Antonio or Austin? They both have major medical centers with people who specialize in pediatric psychiatry.

Is he on anything besides Geodon? Is he taking the Geodon with food? In order for it to be absorbed it needs to be taken with a certain amount of food. Check with any pharmacist for that.

Your son likely does not have ADD or most of these other labels. He more likely has one or two that doctors will zero in on when he gets older and as they observe him.

Why are they saying he has socialization and behavioral issues?
He seems to have a medical problem (psychiatric) that can be helped with the right medication/s.
Google Bipolar Children Org --- to find a parents' group that might help.

His school has the responsibility of educating him. If they cannot provide the resources, then they are supposed to put him in a school / residence outside of town.

Hi I am a parent advocate in Indiana. I work for a organization/ The Indiana Parent Center. Each state has at least one. You can locate Texas's by going
to the Alliance Center. I am going to need some time to find it myself.

I am not a good researcher on finding this particular site. So I will be back
tonight with the site and Texas's Parent Center's I'm pretty sure there are at least 2.

Next I would contact the Texas State Dept of Education, Ask for the Special Education Dept. Talk to the person in charge of Residential placements.
Explain what is going on and how many times he has needed to be placed medically.

I'm also guessing that he is not in school at present. That he is homebounded by the school. Which usually means that someone is coming into the home/ or a building 2 to 10 hours a week and teaching/tutoring him. And then you are responsible to help make sure he gets his homework done.

Is he getting therapy through a outside program? Usually the schools will
provide some kind of therapy, but it might not be any more than 1 or 2 times
a week for one hour. And it might not be the kind he needs.

But the school should be doing something. If he is homebound right now.
They should be meeting at least every 60 days, but you can request every 30 days.

Also for a parent support group.

Sometimes Nami has a Prent Support Group. I am sorry I don't know
what exactly its called. But please Get ahold of your local NAMI
group. If you can't find it. Get ahold of the Texas NAMI GRoUP.

They can tell you who the closest Nami Group is. And then you
can find out what kind of groups they have.


THis is a wonderful group to work with. If the have a consumer group,
I would also check to see if one of the consumers, has a child with
bipolar. If they don't have a group.

In Indiana, My sister has bipolar, and runs a consumer group. She
has foster children, and knows all about children with bipolar. And
would be able to support and help someone like you.

My heart aches for you, I agree with NAMI also. So many great folks and help. Do you have support from family? Sometimes there is a bond with a grandparent that sooths situations.
What are things your ds enjoys? Crafts, cars, dance, music, games, collecting?

I'm sorry to hear about the truble you are having with your son,I have a grandson(well i gess you could call him my grandson my sons girlfriends son) anyway he was diagnosed with a lot of the same things(he's 9) his mom ended up pulling him out of public school and home schooling him,he is still on meds.but he's a lot better. I'm not saying that this is your answer just that it seemed to take a lot of presher off him,I do hope you find some help with this :hug:
