Wisdom tooth swelling three months after extraction

I had my lowwer left wisdom tooth extracted over three months ago. Since that time the swelling in my lower jaw has remained swollen but not painful. There was a small bone and root that was left by the dentist. I have since seen an Oral Surgeon who says that he has no idea why my jaw is swollen. I am having the bone and root removed but surgeon says it would be my choice, not required. I know something happened when my tooth was extracted and I am not sure if the Oral Surgeon is trying to protect the dentist or why he is unable to give me more information. This surgeon has thirty yrs of experience and is also an MD. Please help I am at a lost as to what i should do next.

Hi Gabelle,

Can you post the x-ray here?

Most of the time it is necessary to remove the root tip because it will act as a constant irritant and infection will develop. A swollen jaw is not normal irrelevant of when the surgery was done. I think there may be some good ole boy crap going on which is not uncommon. Did your general dentist extract the wisdom tooth? Is he the one who referred you to this oral surgeon?

Jaw swollen three months after extraction

Thank you for your response. I do not have the xrays. I go tomorrow to have the bone and root surgically removed, which was left from the original extraction. I was referred to this oral surgeon by my dentist. I was thinking the same thing,he's giving me the good old boy answer. I am determined to find out what has happened to my jaw.
