Fusion Rod Separation
I am a post op three time spinal fusion patient. Now S1 to T8. Last two surgeries January and March 2011. Found out rods are separating. Initial notation re separation was May 2011. Just found out November 2012. Having difficulty supporting upper body again and pain around thoracic area back and front. Anyone had this problem. How was the repair approached so not to happen again. Thanks.

I have read of other people having problems with their instrumentation quite often. Some people had breakage, some had screws loosen or come out etc. It's all different and it's a risk with fusion with instrumentation. The ones I read about had to have surgery to replace/fix what was wrong. It's certainly a big problem, and one you wouldn't expect, but unfortunately it happens. :(
I don't think they can guarantee that it won't happen again. I'm sure you weren't out playing football -- you were undoubtedly just living normally, right? So why would this have happened? No one knows. :( I'm sorry you have to go thru this. Please keep us informed as to what happens, and what they're going to do and when, okay? I wish you the very best. God bless and please take care. Hugs, Lee :) |
Fusion Rod Separation
Thanks Lee, yes I am going to have additional surgery. Am in the process of interviewing new surgeons. Don't particularly want to go back to original. There were other problems also.

Hi Scott, I just today read your post and am wondering how you are doing. How did your surgery go and I am hoping that you found a great surgeon to help you. I have had one anterior-posterior spinal fusion L4-S-1 in 2002 and also have pedicle screws and titanium rods placed. I thank God so far, no problems with the instrumentation and am concerned how things are for you! Please let me know-thanx.
