What to do when sick?
Hi all,
I've not really posted before, but I am looking for advice. Me and my son were rear ended on the freeway in stop and go traffic in July 2012. After diagnoses of pcs and ptsd, my son has returned to school, and I am on sick leave from teaching at university. CT scans and MRI were all clear. My diagnoses now includes convergence insufficiency, accommodation insufficiency, vestibular issues, migraines, cervical pain and a lot of "foggy brain" (hard to read, synthesize, respond to questions, etc.) I've used Mike's vitamin regiment, am doing vision therapy, seeing an acupuncturist and my neurologist has prescribed propanolol and trazodone. My usual week is watching the kids in the afternoon, going to appointments but I am mainly staying at home resting and walking. My recovery had the usual good 2 days then bad 2 days, but now I am sick with flu or some virus. My question is what to do when you are sick with pcs/mbti--I feel so awful and fatigued and it's been now over one week. Is this normal? Any advice? This has been an amazing forum-I have learned so much from you all about the daily struggles to which family, friends and doctors can't really relate. |
I have been sick with a head cold since Saturday. I am just trying to stick it out until my system heals. It is doubly miserable. The head aches have been intense.

Nothing you can do but rest more.
Can someone else watch the Children for you for a couple of days. It will help I am a single parent going on 1 year since my injury. I get where you are but you need more rest than before your injury. |
It may take you longer to recover from a bug than your average person. You're brain is used to spending energy healing, rehabing, making new connections, etc. When you are sick your body has to allocate resources differently, so it may take a little bit for your brain to catch up from having less resources. At least that is how my dr. explained it to me.
What is really key, is that you do not get dehydrated! I had a stomach bug and was sent to the ER. The ER doc said that if I even have a second thought about whether I'm losing fluid or not, I need to "run, not walk" to the ER. And he's right. Dehydration is bad news for your brain! If whatever you had is lingering, drink lots of fluids and get lots of rest. It'll pass, but it sure is miserable in the mean time! |
