Fun with Prednisone, head cold and lots of fluids
For many TMI, but I know this topic has been raised here before. I am an ahem "older" lady with MG who has recently experienced the joys of Prednisone, which means drinking lots of fluids and peeing often. Got another miserable cold this week with sore throat, which means even more fluids. That, along with heavy coughing has made for a week I almost want to put on Depends and give up. I mean really, could it get much better?

I'm sorry you're sick. That alone makes MG worse.
Yes, it could get "better." I'm a little concerned though. You could also have Pred-induced diabetes. Peeing a lot is one main sign of it. When was the last time you had your fasting glucose checked? Our bodies have a normal checks and balances system in place to regulate fluids. Sorry if this sounds pedantic. The antidiuretic hormone kicks in when we're dehydrated to allow us to retain what fluids we do have. It backs off when we have too many fluids to allow us to get rid of them. I would suggest seeing an endocrinologist to make sure that you don't have a glucose/pancreatic or pituitary/kidney problem. Don't assume it's simply from drinking a lot. And since you're on Pred, the flu might seem like a cold. Pred can make any infection appear as if it's not as bad as it really is because it suppresses your immune system. Or, ironically, it can make an infection worse. I hope you'll feel much better soon. Annie |
I have been known to drink more than I need. This makes me pee too much.
Prednisone does suck in general. I only use it occasionally and short term. It is a miracle drug. Too bad the side effects ruin the whole thing. I hope you feel better. |
