Normal Vitamin B-12 levels and PN
Hi Mrs. D,
I finally rec'd the results of my lab test - B-12 is 337 pg/ml. Is that an okay level? What is normal? Thanks, Sally |
Nope.... it is below the currently accepted level of 400pg/ml.
You'll need to start methyl B12 orally on an empty stomach ASAP. Labs in US and some other countries go down to 200 or 180, and that is really outdated, as of 2003, when doctors started getting continuing ed on the subject. At those low levels, people can have various neurological problems and those may continue and worsen to a very serious point of damage. Here is a link to explain it: http://www.aafp.org/afp/2003/0301/p979.html Here is our B12 thread... with many posts and informational links: http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread85103.html 5mg a day for 3 months of methylcobalamin, on an empty stomach, and get retested. Stop the vitamin for 7 days before the test. You should be at least at 1000pg/ml. |
Wow, thanks mrsD, that is a lot of info.!
I'm going to the iherb.com site asap to order the methyl B-12. It looks like the B-12 range on my lab report is 180 - 914. I was surprised to see some of the other medications that I have been taking could be considered as factors in my B-12 level. I was on Tagamet for several years (hiatel hernia) and have been on pantoprazole (protonix) for severe heartburn the last 8 years. I have also been diagnosed with and treated for depression on and off for the last 20 years, currently on sertraline (zoloft). Thank you for answering me so quickly. |
VitB
My GP gave me a course of 3 injections of VitB a fortnight apart and each seemed to make me more wobbly. This was before I was diadnosed with NP
