Paresthesias in addition to peripheral neuropathy

Although starting on this thread...
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread185466.html
I was advised that I should try Benfotiamine by Stacy who apparently had all over itching and pricking as well.... Paresthesias

I bought some on Friday and the label said 1-4, 250 mg, thought "what the heck - I'll just take four." Had been having trouble all week and Stacy said they worked for her nearly immediately.

Well, to my delight - no itching all day, not even a hint. :holysheep: (I had been dealing with it for about three days straight up until this point.) Unfortunately- they made my muscles act up, not exactly a cramp but moving on thier own. I have this problem when I try to take fish oil now too - even though I have taken that without trouble for years before pn.... now, with pn, things appear to be different !??!

Next day, I didn't take any Benfotiamine - yet still - not even an inkling of the all over itching and prickling appeared.

Today I took just one - no itching as of yet and not much of annoying muscle movement to speak of, so perhaps that will work.

Mrs. D also suggested Slo Mag, to help with electrolyte issues - that I also purchased and will try tomorrow - as tomorrow is not a work day for me in case I have an issue with it.

So, clearly the most help I have received at this site so far would be Vitamin D info from Mrs. D, eliminated, practically, the cramping I've been dealing with for a long while and the tip from Stacy which has stopped the 'will ruin your whole day' whole body itching and prickling.

So THanks to the both of you again!! :Wave-Hello:

I just thought I'd put up a seperate post here in case anyone is trying to search the topic. Also Mrs. D., on my records I retrieved from my neurologist's office - it said "some paresthesias" on there. It also said - "unspecified obesity" yet mentioned that he only wanted me down ten pounds. That sounded pretty insulting to me for just ten pounds - sheesh! :Scratch-Head:

Reading your records can really be a downer. I've heard many people get incensed at what was said about them.

It used to be that a woman who gets pregnant in her mid-30's was called a senile gravidarum! It was in my referral letter!
I was 34.

Doctors like their medical terms, and they don't really care what YOU think. They write all sorts of judgemental things about our
appearance or attitude also. And they can put in things that are totally in error!

I am happy for you that you are getting some relief now from your miseries. PN can be very wearing, and scarey for many people. So getting some biochemical balance and support for your body, seems to be putting your PN in the paresthesia category, which means you really don't have damage.

This is why I ask so many questions and try to get people to look at their lifestyle, and other factors. Often getting back into a balanced state, can really help significantly.

I managed to get my son off Ritalin with fish oil, magnesium and b-complex. His life completely changed with those nutrients, and Ritalin became history where he was concerned.

So congratulations, and keep up the good work!

I was pregnant at 17 and - exactly - 34 too!!:D

So pulled out my report Mrs. D:

After the nerve conduction test (these are letters sent to my Primary Doc)

Assessment
356.9 UNS IDIOPATHIC PERIPH NEUROPATHY
278.00 OBESITY UNSPECIFIED
844.9 SPRAIN / STRAIN OF KNEE/ LEG UNSPEC
(my right knee was swollen up giant due to lyme disease and it also had arthritis in it, at that time)

Plan: The patient will take the following steps 1. make a concerted effort to NOT cross her r knee on her l knee 2. get regular excercize (bicycling) [me: I told him I was at 35/40 min per day, 6 X's a week during this visit!]

I just lost a bunch of stuff I typed so to be continued next post...

Plan continued:

weight mangment progrm, attemptg to achieve ideal weght of 150-155. Treat with Celebrex [me: although no doc will bother to give me a pre approval for this drug so I cannot get it filled] prn, and vit. b6 100mg q.d.. She will contact me should there be any exacerbation of difficulties, otherwise, to follow up in three months.
That in Oct 2012

Next report, continued...

Dated 2/5/13, this is when I went back in a panic because my leg was in a cramp and felt like it was loosing strength, the more excerzice the more the feeling of lost strength and cramping increased, last time he said he fully expected all to clear up and I could tell he had lied cause I started googling it, found horror stories, etc.. blah blah, you get the pic.

Assessment BP DIS MANIC MODERATE
[me: WasN'T manic, was kinda ****** off]
782.0 DYSESTHESIA PARESTHESIA
MILD OVERWEIGHT

PLAN: Patient is assured that I see no evidence for any major progressive neurologic malady. She is reassured that the findings on nerve conduction studies were relatively minor, and I do not expect them to progress. She needs to cont. to work 60 minutes per day, biking, walking [me- I was down to 20 min. due to being punished for excercizing by 'ball and chain leg cramps'.. he said I was just more sensitive cause I was bp and that most ppl would hardly notice the cramping I have. yea right!!!] reduce her caloric intake, contact me should there be any exacerbation of difficulties, blah blah.
[me- this is when I went running to get accupuncture]

continued, next report...

KarenEVP 03-17-2013 11:40 AM

ok, that was the last official report...

But I made calls and got calls back from him - Finally he told me I could take tegretal early and it would reduce cramping - he had the perfect opportunity to tell me that last visit! That started to help.

I read pn sites where it said, "prepare your house for a wheel chair' and told him I was still worried bout keeping my job, making dinner and doing laundry (plus unspoken: I had a tingling foot in august now here it is Feb and my leg feels like a ball and chain problem, I've got tingling in the other foot and you first told me it was all not to matter and would go away).. and he told me - I've got 70 year olds with much more severe abnormalties than you who are still working! (I thought, yea, but are they walking around with 'ball and chain leg cramps' too or did you actually give them something for it??!)

So, you can tell I have a lot of time at my job to have been able to type all this out. The reports were a lot longer but I tried to type out the pertinant stuff
