Questions for those receiving benefits. . .

I was just approved for benefits and am wondering a couple of things about payments. How long can I expect to wait for my first monthly payment and then how long for the back pay? Just wondered what some of you experienced when you were approved.

Thanks in advance for the info!!

Hi, Nancy.

Congratulations!!

In my experience (and quite a few other people that I've talked to), one day you just check the balance in your checking account and the backpay is suddenly in there. It usually arrives before the paperwork stating that they've made a deposit.

This is the calendar that tells you the date that your monthly check will arrive. It's based on your birthday, unless you also get Medicaid assistance, which, I believe, changes the date to the 3rd of every month. http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/2007calendar.htm

As far as the regular monthly check, the timing is kind of close for this month -- it might start this month. Should definitely start next month.

You can give SSA a call --1-800-772-1213 -- to get a better idea as to when to expect your monies.

Hugs.

If you have been on ssd with Mediciad assistance for many years and
need to move to another state to be near family. Do you have to start
all over??

Sue,

You'll need to notify Social Security that you've moved and also change your banking information so that your disability check goes to your new bank.

You'll have to re-apply for Medicaid. I don't believe that that's transferable even though Federal funds are involved in the program.

You might want to check with your Medicaid worker and find out what the process is for moving. They'll have to be notified of the move anyway to stop any future checks from the current state.

Someone else will probably come along who's actually gone through this. They would more information than I do.

Good luck.

SSD pay

I received my acceptance letter in December of one year and my first monthly payment the next month (January). It all depends on what time of the month they approve you, and there's also a schedule that SSD follows for your monthly payments (if your b-day is between 'xx' and 'yy', then you get paid on 'z.'

The back pay came at the same time as my first monthly check. THis is all according to memory, as it was 7 years ago. The back pay already had my attorney's pay taken on, so I didn't need to worry about paying up front. SSD took care of that for me.
