Drug Question

I'm still around here, always lurking, reading, keeping up. Hope you all are well.

I have a question about a drug the dr gave my mom for acid reflux, since she too has neuropathy, I wanted to ask if this drug is ok. I am a bit confused by something I read about it, it seems like it contains two anitbiotics???

Omeprazole

As a therapeutic adjuvant in treating Helicobacter pylori related ulcers

Omeprazole is combined with the antibiotics clarithromycin and amoxicillin (or metronidazole in penicillin-hypersensitive patients) in the 7–14 day eradication triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori. Infection by H. pylori is the causative factor in the majority of peptic ulcers.

If you have any opinion, that would be great! thanks!!

Metronidazole is neurotoxic.

The others do not appear on lists as yet.

However, the acid blocker will reduce B12, so it would be a good idea to start 5mg of methylB12, on an empty stomach, now.

So, Im confused. Sorry :(

So, it does have antibiotics in it?

Also, Mrs.D I am trying to order Jarrow methy B12 on amazon but stangely the picture of the product does NOT match what it should look like. I keep googling and I know what it SHOULD look like, even on Jarrows site, but the picture is different on amazon. Has that ever happened to you? I can't figure it out.

thanks mrsD!

Ok I just googled Metronidazole and its an antibiotic. Why in the world did the dr prescribe that for acid reflux? Im so confused.

It should only be described when there is a diagnosis of ulcers. The good thing is that doctors finally understand that ulcers are a bacterial problem (took a good 20 years that one), but it seems the bad thing is that they are now giving antibiotics "just in case"?

So to be clear: the antibiotics do make sense if she has peptic ulcers. If not, there are better alternatives. But, as Mrs.D said, all antacids cause a reduction of B12 absorption, so adding that is a good idea anyway.

The Jarrows B12 packaging looks new to me too FWIW.

I use the Puritan's one now.

Check your ingredients carefully... Amazon has some complaints here and there of sending the wrong thing.

This is the Jarrow website:

Some of the labels do look new.

There is another treatment for ulcers... it includes bismuth (like Pepto bismol). There are studies showing it is very effective for some.

Also DGL has promise:

Ulcers

There are different kinds of ulcers. Stomach ulcers are usually caused by a bacterium. Peptic ulcers are caused by stomach acid. Treatment is different depending on what kind you have.

I am really going to have to research this further. This dr doesn't even know if she HAS an ulcer. She has been on nexium for years for acid reflux and for some reason (unclear to me) she got off nexium about 6 months ago and was taking nothing.

Yesterday she went to dr and while there complained of her acid reflux bothering her and this was the drug prescribed.

MrsD you said it's neurotoxic, which means harmful to nerves, so this is a red flag right away.

Also, I am not sure she even has an ulcer and I question how this silly dr can no that without doing a single test.

The antibiotic part of this scares me too.

Thank you ALL for your input, it's so awesome now you all respond and I truly appreciate it.

Ok I went to the jarrow link MrsD provided and found the b12 there that is on amazon

http://www.jarrow.com/product/75/Methyl_B-12

But I tried to find this last night and kept finding a different packaging. In the link above is what I was going to order but I hate cherry flavor :(

So hopefully this is correct.

thanks
