reduce or drop the calcium

Bizi, You might not need the calcium. Calcium supplements have been linked to heart attacks. Get your calcium from green leafy veggies and salmon. http://www.nydailynews.com/life-styl...icle-1.1265614 Can calcium supplements kill? The safe way to strengthen your bones Quote:

Thank you for your input and research I appreciate your effort.
I have been taking any where from 500mg to 1000mg a day of the calcium. I don't eat any dairy at all. I eat green leafy veggies once a day mon thru fri. When I fell and broke my collar bone 2 years ago I was tested for bone density and this is where they discovered that I was osteopenia and vit d deficient thus the supplementation. Vit D level is where it should be at 50. Have not rechecked the bone density levels. thank you again for taking the time to post this. will think about the coral calcium I thought it was more easily absorbed over the calcium citrate which i was taking before. Plus it is in a capsule as I am trying to switch over all of my supplements into more readily absorbed forms of delivery capsule is better than tablet in theory. bizi |
Bizi,

The calcium in milk and diary is not as absorbable as calcium in plants. The USDAs dairy recommendations are probably built on the dairy industry's lobbying. You could eat sardines with bones. That gives you calcium. Also, you could make soup with bones. The bones have good minerals. That is absorbable. Quote:
Getting magnesium and vitamin D is very helpful for your calcium levels. Maybe cut down to 500 mg although that one study said ANY level of calcium supplementation is a bad idea. Certainly talk to your MD the next time you go. Good sources of calcium: http://www.all-creatures.org/health/...kanddairy.html Quote:

I use to take Coral Calcium. I would mix it in warm water, let it dissolve, and drink it. I stopped taking it about 8 years ago. Also at that time I was taking MDR,AM,and PM vitamins for a long time. They where good.
Now I'm taking 3 Lipo-Flavonoid's pills(Citrus orange peal) a day from Walmart for a occasional ringing in my left ear,Centrum, and something called Omega XL. I called them back, and said I want to cancel my order because it was 60 some dollars. Then they brought it down to 38 dollars,so I've been trying them. Two pills a day. Omega XL is suppose to be good for joint health, and inflammation. I use to take herbs,(All Kinds) but discontinued them a long time ago. Before bed,I take Xylitol in a bottle of water, after I brush, and floss my teeth. It's very good for the gum line. I have all of my teeth. BF:hug::hug::hug: |

If the coral calcium is from Okinawa Coral, you might want to change it to the Brazil coral calcium. I hope that this is not alarming. I'm just concerned, and want you to be healthy. BF:hug::hug::hug: |
Some doctors are recommending only a maximum of 600mg of calcium a day, when using high dose D. Vit D greatly increases the amount of calcium absorbed in the intestine.
The magnesium however... should not be oxide form...so check your label of the coral product. A good product for magnesium is SlowMag, which is affordable now at WalMart. Their website is very helpful in explaining food sources too. One SlowMag twice a day, is the basic dose and suggested for those only getting 1/2 of their mag from food: http://www.slowmag.com/ This product was originally targeting doctors and pharmacists, back in the late '80's. It was made by Searle, and remains OTC, but now owned by Purdue. Now that the price has come down, and it is commonly sold at WalMart, I tend to recommend it for newbies. But any chelate you want to use will work as well. Glycinate taurate malate citrate gluconate lactate are some. There is a very good lotion, now, a reformulated version of CVS epsom lotion, (which was discontinued) 2 yrs ago. Morton's Epsom lotion is also at WalMart at $5.98 for 8oz. A small dollop rubbed into the skin (if you have muscle pain or foot pain, etc) will provide magnesium that way. It is a very nice elegant product. Non-greasy, no fragrance. http://www.mortonsalt.com/for-your-h...-epsom-lotion/ A little goes a long way, so don't over use--it is not like a skin moisturizer. We at PN use this and it is great ... just about my favorite thing now! ;) |
the calcium is from fossilized coral calcium and the magnesium is a combination of mag oxide, ctrate and aspartate. It also lists magnesium stearate as an other ingrediant. It states that this coral calcium is not harvested from living coral reefs but from above ground sources in an ecologically friendly manner. It is a Now brand name that I trust from our local health food store. The ratio of calcium to magnesium is 2:1.
Thank you mrs. Doubtfire, I always appreciate your input. Hope you are well. bizi |
When products list oxide with other chelates... it is the oxide that predominates. Oxide is not appreciably absorbed. Hence the SlowMag was made to encourage doctors to use a better version.
Magnesium oxide is used still because it is 40% elemental...keeping the size of the tablets down. But we now know it is useless...it is now a laxative only, Phillips caplets. So I wouldn't count on more than a few milligrams of that magnesium being absorbed. Magnesium stearate is also not absorbed, it remains in the bowel like the oxide does. Hence there is no therapeutic advantage to it. Its purpose is to lubricate the flow of the powders that enter the tablet pressing machines. It is an inert excipient therefore. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Excipient |
I was taking mag citrate alone but finished that bottle, will go look for some slow mag. Thanks for the information!
