When will dizziness stop?

Dear All,

I hit my top of head two months ago. Doctor said it's just slight concussion and will recover very soon. My only symptom is dizziness, but it NEVER stop. So I guess it's PCS. My dizziness is like I'm a swaying tree in the wind no matter when standing still. My head is very heavy and can't help "sway" all the time. Dizziness lasts ALL DAY LONG and become worse when sleeping. Sometimes I wake up in the midnight due to dizziness......

It really troubles my life. I have no idea how long I can recover from this dizziness. Does anyone have similar symptom with me? Is it ear rock problem after hitting?

Please give me some suggestions. Thank you guys.

Vestibular Therapy

Hi Denni,

So sorry to hear about your dizziness. I had that too and it was horrible.

I wen to vestibular therapy and the therapist gave me special exercises to help stimulate my vestibular system and it really worked for me. It cleared up fast after I got in and started the exercises.

Can your doctor refer you to vestibular therapy?

Sincerely,

pm

If vestibular therapy doesn't help . . .

Then you need to see a neuro-opthamologist. It could be a problem with your vision caused by your concussion. You can have 20/20 vision and still have problems, so don't even bother going to any doctor other than a neuro-optometrist or a neuro-opthamologist. See my siggy below for a list of eye-related issues after a concussion!

I would schedule an appointment with an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) specialist.

It could be dizziness or vertigo. It could require a simple exercise program or surgery.

It could be BPPV (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) in which naturally occurring crystals are knocked out of position and need to be repositioned through exercises.

The problem is, you will not know what the cause of the dizziness is until you see a doctor who can help pinpoint when, how often, and what the experience is like for you.

I found the website for the US vestibular association (http://vestibular.org) very helpful.

My neurologist thought the subjective vertigo and dizziness would resolve themselves naturally, but it looks a bit more complicated. I just went to the ENT a month ago and this is 9 months after the car accident!

Good luck!

Hello Dennis!

Dizziness is a common lingering symptom of PCS, however, it could mean a warning sign for something else. Dizziness and vertigo commonly come from the inner ear, so a visit to a good ENT is advised to check for ear issues, first.

If you are not on medication, a slight relief of dizziness may be achieved by Dramamine, an anti-emetic.

Also, dizziness can also come from vision issues? Are you finding any issues from reading or watching the TV? Do things double up in your line of sight? Or are words smushed together? If so, a great visit to an neuro eye doctor is recommended, to get prisms.

I wear prisms and it has been a godsend for me, dizziness reduced. As a child, I had a slight history of lazy eye which worsened after the accident, text doubled in my line of sight and I had no idea why. Dizziness was also a symptom, I scheduled an appointment with my eye doctor and she fixed everything! She is also a doctor for eye muscle disorders and neuroopthamology.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes!

Vestibular Therapy

I would recommend getting your balance/vestibular checked like a few had suggested.I did vestibular for 6months and after the first month the dizziness stopped for most part.

You have to make sure you get a good vestibular therapist that is certified if this is the problem. A therapist that is not educated can do more harm than help.I wish you the best:hug:Mia
