Fecal Transplants for Parkinson's Disease

For those who don't already know, fecal transplants are simply the transfer by methods such as an enema of a stool solution from a healthy individual to an ailing one in hopes of positive change in the receiver's intestinal bacteria. I am not going to go into detail at this time about why this might actually work other than to point out that the GI system is a complex chemical factory and the largest component of our immune system. It is already known that there is tremendous potential here, especially as antibiotics become less and less effective. And since the same "factories" produce things like, say, dopamine this new frontier is set to explode.

There is a problem, however. If it becomes common knowledge that this works and that people are bringing about medical miracles in the privacy of their own homes, Big Pharma and its cohorts are going to be very unhappy. An attempt to derail this simple bio-tech has been inevitable. The opening salvo has just been fired with the announcement last week by the FDA that they were taking over and would be in charge from here on. See last week's Scientific American here.

As one who would personally delight in performing a similar transplant onto the FDA's beurocratic grave, I would like to thwart these SOBs and transferring the basic info that we have found thus far is one way to do it. So, read on or get back up on the porch with the little dogs. :D

Sometimes when doctors use unregulated treatments, people will die unnecessarily.

BUT, sometimes people will die unnecessarily if unregulated treatments are refused.

I think we have the balance wrong. Many people are too scared of making a mistake, so they take the safe option for them but not, perhaps, for the patient.

It would be interesting to know whether PD experts, if they were to have the disease, would use fecal transplants now or whether they would wait for the testing to finish? And, nicotine patches and curcumin and calcium channel blockers ...

The good news is that this forum let's us know what's available and so much we can DIY.

It will be the supreme irony if the regulations that are meant to safeguard us force us to DIY.

Heck, you can do it with a blamed turkey baster-

Here is an informative article complete with How To.

The LA Times

PLOS - "If you have the cash, though, FMT is worth it. The studies that have been done so far are astounding: in one trial of patients suffering from C. difficile infection (a diarrheal disease that can be life-threatening and antibiotic-resistant), an infusion of feces cured 94% of the patients. The usual treatment, an antibiotic called vancomycin, only cured 27%. "

aking it beyond the usual and how the nervous system fits in.
