New technique for deep brain stimulation surgery proves accurate and safe

Oregon Health & Science University neurosuirgeons have developed a safer new way to perform the surgery for Parkinson’s disease. It allows for more accurate placement of the brain electrodes and is likely safer for patients.

The success and safety of the new surgical technique could have broad implications for deep brain stimulation,(DBS) surgical procedures.

With traditional DBS surgery, there is a small chance of hemorrhaging in the brain as the surgeon places or moves the electrodes to the right spot in the brain. Patients are also asleep during the surgery, rather than being awake under local anesthesia to help surgeons determine placement of the electrodes..


The new technique uses advances in brain imaging within recent years to place the electrodes more safely and more accurately than in traditional DBS surgery. The surgical team uses CT scanning during the surgery itself, along with an MRI of the patient’s brain before the surgery, to precisely place the electrodes in the brain, while better ensuring no hemorrhaging or complications from the insertion of the electrode...

Too bad they didn't have the procedure available when I had the surgery 7 years ago. Now I have been told that they think the lead was pushed into the limbic system.

Does anyone find a neurologist they can believe anymore? The first time I saw mine he was a gift from heaven. The 4th time he was cold and right to the point. The 6th time I saw him he could discuss nothing except what he had me scheduled, No questions, He had a schedule to keep. The next appointment he had all the time in the world and he "believed me." Now he says the DBS was misplaced and would I trust him to reprogram it. So much flip-flopping, what's a girl to do? Only I, the great and powerfully educated can diagnosis you. "You should never have had the surgery." Don't pay attention to the Emergency Room Doctor behind the curtain. He only was trying to scare you by keeping you in a coma during the summer before you had DBS surgery. The labs from emergency must have made a mistake by assuming your Kidneys shut down due to the protein your body dumped into the kidneys because of your severe dyskeinsia spasms." "You can't have PD, you have delayed stress syndrome."

Either I am mad or the Neuros' are. Now I just say yes to anything they ask. It doesn't seem worthwhile anymore. Doctor/patient working together? Not happening in my lifetime. Not as long as the lambskin trumps a patients discussion of his symptoms. Doctors' don't have the patients to listen anymore.:eek::wink:
