Professional seeks information about TBI for a toddler.

I am a RN. I am currently seeking information to aid a family whose young child was stricken with tubercular meningitis with whom I am caring for. I am wanting information about how to determine which area's of the brain were damaged. I believe if we are capable of determining these area's, we can find a way to reach this child and help this child find the way back. I believe the brain has a way of finding new pathways around damaged areas and it is my hope that we can bring this child to a more optimal level of cognition and motor function. I have been gleaning the internet looking for anything I can find. PET scans, really good rehabilitation hospitals that know how to help infants and children come from the depths. This child makes some eye contact, but only responds to loud sounds. This child can eat food, but is unable to talk. Before this disease struck at age 3, this child was very bright, outgoing and could say the ABC's. Now one year later, this child has muscle rigidity, head lag but there is some movement of the extremities. I need as much information as possible. The mother is grieving and feels that she was some how negligent and that is why the child became ill, in essence she is blaming herself.
As a nurse, it is my hope and prayer that I can help educate not only the family but myself as well, on how better to help this child and family. All responses are welcome.
