Would this be considered rape?

I know this question doesn't exactly fit in this topic, but this seems a safe place to ask a sensitive question. I had a sexual relationship with a man who lied to me about his marital status. He swore up and down that he had been divorced for three years when I met him. We had intercourse four times over one weekend spent together. I willingly had sex with him at the time. But when I found out about four weeks later that he was still very married, I felt betrayed and traumatized. I never, ever, would had had any kind of relationship with this man if I had known the truth. Is consent still given if it is given under false circumstances? Opinions please? I have been considering filing charges against this man.

Men and women have been guilty of this kind of deception for millennia. IMO, What he did was mendacious and contemptible, morally and ethically reprehensible... but not rape. Filing charges would not only be fruitless, it may cause even more problems for you.

People who do this invariably repeat, and eventually get caught by their spouses, and hoisted by/with their own petard.

However, if he lied to you about that, he may have lied about other things as well. It would be prudent to have yourself checked out by your doctor. If you're ok, then forget this pig, and get to know future dates a bit better before taking that step. ;)

I agree with Dr Smith....and believe that he said it better than I could have.

So sorry that you've had this experience though, BobCat. It's a scary dating world out there and we all have to be very careful who we trust.
