Heartburn-not going away
About 2 weeks ago out of the blue, I started having extreme heartburn. The Dr. prescribed Prilosec, which provides 'some' relief, but not completely. I'm also using Tagamet(non-prescription) before bed.
I take scrupulous care of myself, as I'm 10 months post tx for HCV, I drink lots of water, avoid fatty, salty and sugery food; only have 1 cup coffee per day, and get a sufficient amount of exercise & sleep. I have periodic endoscopic exams for HCV related varicies of the esophagus, and during such exam was found to have a benign stomach tumor. I am wondering if there is a connection between the sudden onset of excess stomach acid, and the stomach tumor? |
Hi tnThomas,
I started having major heartburn ... I began sitting up to sleep, which helped dramatically. The heartburn went away, I can't be exactly sure when, but I think that it began to lessen when I began to eat yogurt every day. I got a yogurt maker, and ... make yogurt daily. One reason I decided to make yogurt was its influence on h.pylori... basically, it sort of gets rid of it. h.pylori interferes with stomach acid production, so you'd think that would mean you'd have less or no heartburn if you have h.pylori... but, that doesn't seem to be the case. What infact you don't have is B12 and magnesium from food... Years ago I used yogurt to get rid of asthma. Then I stopped eating it regularly. Well, that's it for my ideas on the heartburn front... If I were you, I'd try yogurt. The kind you make, I use probiotics as my starter, is full of good micro-organisms. I even did a web page on it when I found a particular micro-organism that appears to increase B12 content. :-) |
Yogurt- I like yogurt, sounds like it's worth a try.
It's a bit ironic that you mention B-12, I had been taking B-12 suppliments(these) up until a few months ago, primarily in hopes of aiding the periphral neuropathy affecting my feet. As I had taken the B-12 for a year but had not realized any improvement of the PN in my feet, was the reason for discontinuing. I did 'feel' that the B-12 had provided some general benefit in my health, but I really did not have tangible evidence to point to. |
If you are overweight you might have heartburn worse. One thing that I've read and a person I know did it for heartburn was to elevate the head of the bed by 6" either with blocks or books. It worked.
For myself, I do not eat very much for supper. In fact, it is usually a piece of toast with either cheese or some peanut butter on it and some lite yogurt. I eat Yoplait. Yoplait because I like it and have eaten it for quite some time. But the light eating at supper is very important for me. And nothing really sweet either. Also, the weight thing and I'm not heavy. I should say that I have not had heartburn very often at all. I know that acid reflux can be a dangerous thing. But, as I said, I've only had it maybe 4-5 times in my life. Hope you find an answer. |
Re: about heartburn
Hello all to those who get heartburn. This acid reflux is more dangerous than I ever knew. It is important to stay on top of it with a good gastro doc. I ate tums and over the counter products for years before I finally gave in and saw this kind of doctor. My own Gerds, resulted in having barretts esophagus, and hernia. With proper care and plenty of check ups, I am finally better. Please keep seeking good help, so it doesn't progress to something more serious. Sleep elevated if you can, that will help. I wish all of you the best. ginnie

PN is tricky. I had it so badly, SO badly. I won't describe because I'm sure you know. Anyway, I got tetanus and finally had a prescription filled for injectable cobalamin, which I was still using at the time. The prescription was for enough cobalamin for a shot a day for a year. I hadn't filled it because I was sure it was a maths error on the part of the holistic M.D. But, the tetanus was really scary and I didn't have the money for a doctor visit to get the antibiotic prescription because my tenants had burned out the boiler in my rental, the source of all my income at the time. I was still too young for social security. So, I started having a B12 shot a day, and... to my HUGE surprise the PN went away. Since then, up until I switched from GMO to Organic food, I was using about 5 to 6 of the 5mg sublinuals a day, to get the same effect as a B12 shot a day. Point ~ You might try using more of the sublinguals. That's what did it for me ~ having more B12. |
