Lonely because of my condition

Hello people, I'm a 21 year old college student studying aerospace engineering. I just transferred to a new school that is very well known for this field but am not very happy because I literally know no one. I know things would be better if I were to just go out and get to know some of the students here, but I have issues becoming close to people. I was diagnosed with a mitochondrial myopathy a few years ago and it seemed as though the people that I cared about would become very upset whenever I mentioned what I was going through physically. I know it was only normal for them to be concerned considering the nature of the disease, but I pretty much withdrew myself from several relationships because I felt terrible about making them feel bad and didn't want them to cry about me anymore. I guess I'm just scared that I'll have to do the same here.

Anyway, I'd be willing to answer any questions if you have any. Thanks for reading.

Hi lachesis

Welcome to Neuro Talk. You will never be alone here. Lots of people around to say hello to. I am sorry for your condition. Real friends will not pull away from you just because you are sick. do you need them anyway, if there is no compassion in them?. Go ahead and get to know a few people and take a chance. There really are some nice people out there.
Great about your education. Keep on trucking! I may be alot older, but I do know the value of talking to some friendly ears. Don't be alone, you can talk to me any time. I am female, and artist (can't help myself) and I have several unpleasant conditions. I love Neuro Talk, Came here myself, pretty much scared out of my wits and never left. Found some great friends, that helped me through alot of tough situations.
Let me know more about what you are doing in classes. Love the field you chose. Anything you would care to share, I am here to listen to. Have a good day, I care. ginnie:grouphug:

Hi and welcome to NeuroTalk. I'm glad you found us! This is a great place.

I can relate to not having friends due to your illness. When I became disabled, all my friends dropped me too! But that was because I wasn't able to do much, and they were out and about all the time.

If you have friends who pull away due to your telling them about things you're going thru physically, I find that pretty shallow! I doubt YOU would do the same thing if they told you things they were going thru! It seems that a lot of younger people anymore just don't know the TRUE meaning of friendship like we did in my "era." We stood together. I just had my best friend of 60 YEARS die. We'd been best friends since I was 4 yrs old, and were inseparable. You don't see friendships like that anymore, and it's too bad. :(

Just keep meeting people, and trying to make friends. And if need be, just don't mention your condition unless it's absolutely necessary. I wish you the very best, my friend. God bless and please take care. Hugs, Lee ;)
