vit E and question

Is it really suppose to help with your hair and nails . My hair is falling out but not bad ...

mrsD 07-07-2013 04:24 AM

Biotin and zinc also help with hair loss.

One of our PN posters is seeing improvement in hair loss with acetyl carnitine. There are some sites on the net that suggest carnitine for hair loss too.

Diet is important. Lots of different supplements are good too. Hormones can also also affect hair and skin, etc.

thought that vit was for Alzheimer’s disease, I got some biotin too , so will see what happens

I am on vitamin E super complex for improvement or liver protection. Lab results have been promising.

I've been taking E and biotin for over a year now for different reasons. No noticable difference in hair loss.

How much Biotin are you taking I am taking 600mg ? Is that enough

Dr. Smith 07-24-2013 11:05 AM

That's a complex question...

Enough for what? (Are you sure that's mg and not mcg?)

I'm taking 1000 mcg, which is equal to 1 mg., but I'm not taking it for hair loss.

Here's the thing...

Hair loss

Although hair loss is a symptom of severe biotin deficiency (see Deficiency), there are no published scientific studies that support the claim that high-dose biotin supplements are effective in preventing or treating hair loss in men or women.
Linus Pauling Institute
Emphasis mine.

All of the hype I've seen regarding biotin and hair loss is coming from sites with something to sell -- supplements, hair products, books, etc. As is often the case, they jump on some small scrap of weak evidence and blow it up into something it's not. There was apparently one small study cited by the University of Maryland Medical Center:
Quote:

Very weak evidence suggests that biotin supplements may improve thin, splitting, or brittle toe and fingernails, as well as hair. Biotin, combined with zinc and topical clobetasol propionate, has also been used to combat alopecia areata in both children and adults.
Emphasis mine.

Ok I see thanks for the info

Dr. Smith 07-25-2013 11:18 PM

Just a final note...

In poking around quite a few (~20) of these "biotin for hair loss" hyping sites, I found recommended dosages ranging from 500 mcg up to 5000 mcg per day. The fact that there is no concensus is very telling -- no studies or science behind the claims. ;)
