When do you decide to go on disability?

When (for those have you who have) and how have you decided to go on disability?

There is the obvious - right after the accident and you need to get that immediate rest....

But what about the more long term,if you returned to work. How did you evaluate if things are 'working'? What level of a daily headache from it is ok? How many exceptions did your work make for your condition?

(FYI my state has disability insurance that I've paid into w/ each paycheck via a tax...so easier the social security process.)

I was just too nauseous to continue at my desk and too weak. why don't you try lesser hours first and if you cant do that then go on disability.

Heatherr,

You don't say what state you are in. California's SDI is a limited Disability Insurance plan with a limited duration. If you are in Calif. Go to the State Disability Department or call them and ask them if you can get SDI. Take a list of your struggles at work and the times your boss or co-workers have needed to cover for you or provide extra help or such. There is a formula of how much you can receive based on what you have contributed. Hopefully, Sacramento or your state capitol has not raided the funds.

If you find yourself in an endless loop trying to work, crashing, recovering, working, crashing, rinse and repeat, you should seriously consider disability.

Hope your state has a good plan that is well funded.

My best to you.
