New to mestinon scared

Hey everyone my name is vic my doctor just prescribed me mestinon 30mg twice a day then ramp up to 60mg twice a day im worried about two things mostly i know that increasing acetylcholine can either increase or decrease dopamine if it increases nictonic receptors it increases dopmaine if it increases muscranic receptors it will decrease dopamine , with a decrease in dopamine the symptoms can be depression, libido loss, ect so does mestinon increase or decrease dopamine or is it neutral does anyone know ? does anyone know which receptors of acetylcholine it works now ? also another thing i wanted to ask if it makes you gain weight ? im not a fan of any meds that make me gain weight so if anyone can tell me if this med makes someone gain weight ill appreciate it , thank you so much everyone :)

Hello Vic, and welcome..:) Mestinon affects chemicals in the body that are involved in the communication between nerves and muscles. Mestinon helps to keep the chemical, acetylcholine, in the muscle synapse, just a little longer, so the message from the nerve can reach the receptors. I am not aware of any solid research that involves dopamine and pyridostigmine bromide (Mestinon). You'll find some good, simple information and visuals, on YouTube. There is some good information out there, re: muscarinic and nicotinic receptors.

It is said that Mestinon does not pass through the blood/brain barrier but the debate continues. Mestinon is not responsible for depression, problems with libido, mood changes, etc., nor is not responsible for weight gain.

Fortunatos is correct. I will add that the way you were prescribed to take it will likely not be very satisfactory as mestinon only lasts about 4 hours per dose. If you see good results but then a little crash until the next dose, talk to your MD about a new dosing schedule.

I have been on mestinon for almost 3 months now and have actually lost almost 10 pounds. I think it is because I now am able to be so much more active, after a year of mostly lying on the couch

I agree totaly with 4-eyes. I started with 3 x 60mil a day, and have progressed to 4 a day. Some of our folks here take much more than that.
Good luck as you walk this road, it could be a lot worse.
FREDH:)
