Trileptal and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN)

Hello Everyone,

By any chance does anyone know about Trileptal causing Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) or has anyone ever developed this as a result of taking Trileptal or even another AED?

Has anyone gotten itchy with bumps, and feel a sensation of prickly heat on throughout their body? I understand this is quite rare but I'm sure it still happens. I did find this bit of information if anyone would care to read about it:

"As of April 19, 2005 the FDA and Novartis pharmaceuticals (the manufacturers of Trileptal) issued a new warning regarding oxcarbazepine. Serious dermatological reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), have been reported in both children and adults in association with Trileptal use. SJS and TEN may start with fever and flu-like symptoms followed by a rash, with or without ulcers of the mucous membranes, that quickly progresses to blisters that burn and are painful. If you notice a rash while taking oxcarbazepine, you should call your doctor immediately, and be prepared to describe it. Very rarely, these rashes are serious and with prompt attention and treatment, most potentially dangerous rashes will resolve completely."

I hope it's alright if I post this here. I will post this in the Bipolar Forum as well. Perhaps someone has experienced this as well.

Thank you,

WindWalker

Hi WindWalker,

I took tegretol and trileptal and I broke out with a rash from the drug with tiny red bumps on my arms and face that itched like crazy. I saw a dermatologist who did a skin biopsy on me and found out I was allergic to both of these drugs along with lamictal. What you need to do is see a dermatologist use dove soap for sensitive skin with lukewarm water, and the Dr. will give you a steroid cream that will clear up the rash. Just don't use shampoos or anything with perfumes or it will make the rash worse. It took about 1 full month for the rash to clear up on me and I was fine.
I took tegretol for many yrs. until I became allergic to the drug and then I stopped it but I had no problems with Steven Johnson Syndrome. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!

Hi Darlene and Porkette,

Thank you for the responses: Darlene Thank you for the warm welcome, I appreciate it. Porkette Thank you for sharing your experience and the advice. Glad to hear your allergic reaction didn't result in any type of anaphylactic reaction.

Thanks again,

WindWalker
