Ear Problems
Ever since my concussion in early April, my ears have been clicking/crackling when I swallow. I get some ear pain at times as well. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?

I have had an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor and primary care doctor note eustacian tube dysfunction and temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

Yeah I will definitely book an appointment. Interestingly I am basically four months into PCS and my headaches have gotten A LOT worse these last two weeks. My jaw is aching and now my left eye feels like its going burst out of my socket at any given time...I don't know why all this is happening now, four months deep into PCS....very disappointed.

Sorry, I meant to go into more detail on my previous posting, but I got called away.
My doctor said TMJD can get worst over time, especially with PCS/mtbi. It's a connected but a gradual pain. I am beyond confused, but I have noticed that with the jaw pain there is an excruciating headache that is different from migraine and others. Do get it checked out-I'm on the hunt for a local specialist. |
I've actually had what you are describing my whole life, it also was really bad when I would run.

Hi Mike,
I had a concussion at the end of March so yours was around a week or so after. I was exactly the same way, in July my headaches became so severe and I told my therapist my eyes felt as though they were pushing out of their sockets, there's also pain and pressure. My neurological OT is great, she explains everything so well, everything of course is connected, brain, eyes, ears etc...cannot remember (have trouble remembering stuff ) but she was explaining a lot about how our ears are also damaged due to the concussion. Are you seeing a neurological OT and are you doing vestibular therapy? My jaw hurts more and when I also swallow my ears "click" |
Hey Mike,
You definitely need to get it checked out by a doctor, but it does sound like TMJD. My jaw was dislocated per x ray findings with a diagnosis of TMJD. I actually got the best help from my dentist. He made (wow, forget the technical name darn it!) clear forms for my upper teeth and at each visit ground it down until months later my jaw was in the proper location again. I lost the retainer to wear at night so I'm having clicking and muscle problems again. Check your insurance coverage - both my health and dental no longer cover anything to do with TMJ issues and it can be costly. ~Kristy |
