Old and behind the times

Hi,

Could someone help me with some abbreviated items. I am very behind the times and do not understand a lot of the abbreviations used by many posters. I get most of the medical ones, it is the others that stump me.

Could someone make a list of ones frequently used that I could refer to when needed?

Now I know I am getting old. I am starting to sound like my parents did when I was a teenager. The shoe is on the other foot now.

Thanks for any help.

On the chronic pain forum at the top
of the first page in the stickies is a
Post with abbreviations in it. The most
Common ones are there.

I can't link on this iPhone.. Sorry.

What abbreviations are you having trouble with?

If you post them here we can decipher them for you.

Hi Jo Mar,

I will make a note of them when I come across them and then ask you about the specific ones. I did go to the link Kitty left for me and was glad to find some answers. It is not the medical ones that pose a problem, it is the everyday shortcuts used by young people today that are used in text messaging. I don't text and have no children so I am totally out of the loop with the shortcuts. I finally learned OMG with the help of a teenager. I think BTW, is by the way. Am I correct on that one?

Hi Mrs. D,

Thanks for your reply. I am sorry you took time from your vacation to answer my question. Hope you are enjoying the Labor Day weekend. I have seen you on NT often while on vacation so I guess you never truly take a break.

Thanks for all your help and advice.

Yes, btw is short for "by the way". We generally don't use texting abbreviations on this site. I don't text, either, and can get lost really quickly trying to read what the kids today are typing!

There are abbreviations used on this site for words like "diagnosis" (dx) and "symptoms" (sx) but the texting abbreviations are not widely used here.

A few "text" type things - might be caps or lower case but means the same
I don't even know that many of them, I don't text either..

LOL - laugh out loud

jk - just kidding

IDK - I don't know

U - you

R - are

And, a few others I see people using here at times--

FWIW -- for what it's worth

IMHO -- in my humble opinion

YMMV -- your mileage may vary

OTOH -- on the other hand

Thanks Glenn,

These were exactly the ones I was curious about. BIG help. Thanks again.
